Johnstown, Fairbanks win on Monday

December 30, 2013

Michigan Warriors 2 @ Johnstown Tomahawks 3 (SO) - After spending the last 37 days on the road, the Johnstown Tomahawks gave nearly 2,900 fans a warm welcome back to the Cambria County War Memorial Monday night, as they toppled the Michigan Warriors 3-2 in a shootout. Johnstown's Tyler Basham opened scoring with his third of the season with 2:23 remaining in the first period when he took a one-time pass from Dakoda Menslage and sailed it past the shoulder of Michigan goaltender Trevor Gorsuch for a powerplay goal. The Tomahawks increased their lead to two at 10:38 of the second period, when Matt Matt Meier netted his ninth of the year. Michigan got on the board as Tyler Groat scored a powerplay goal with the extra attacker on the ice for the Warriors. The Tomahawks couldn't contain Michigan's forecheck on the ensuing shift, as Jon Farkas tipped a Collin Larkin shot through Jake Moore's legs for his sixth of the year, sending the game to a scoreless overtime. Basham again found the back of the net as the shootout's first shooter, and Moore stopped the next four consecutive shots. Jordan Watt, who had been seemingly injured earlier in the game but remained on the bench, came on as Johnstown's final shooter, rocketing a hard wrister past Gorsuch and into the back of the net to secure the win. Moore earned the win, stopping 37 of 39 shots faced. For Michigan, Gorsuch stopped 39 of 41 shots in the loss. Boxscore

Fairbanks Ice Dogs 3 @ Minnesota Magicians 1 – Fairbanks goalie Kevin Aldridge made a season-high 35 saves as the IceDogs beat the Minnesota Magicians 3-1 on Midwest match-up on Monday night. Both Aldridge and Minnesota’s Atte Tolvanen were prefect through two periods as neither team was able to find the back of the next. Five minutes into the 3rd period, the Ice Dogs would strike first as Lonnie Clary scored. Four minutes later, Kyle Lee scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the Ice Dogs. The Magicians finally broke through Aldridge and the Ice Dogs with five minutes to play in the 3rd period as Jordan Stejskal scored a power play goal. However, a late empty-net goal from Tayler Munson would secure the win for the Ice Dogs, whose lead in the Midwest Division grew to five points with the win. Tolvanen made 29 saves in the loss.
