Bruins edge Blizzard on Wednesday, 2-1

March 5, 2015

Zach Kennedy had the game-winning goal in the 2nd period on Wednesday night.

Brookings 1 @ Austin 2 – The Austin Bruins added to their division lead and clinched at least home ice in the first round of the playoffs with a 2-1 win at home Wednesday night over the Brookings Blizzard.

The Bruins took advantage of the first power play of the game as less than four minutes into the 1st period, Nico Sturm scored a power play goal to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Sturm crept in from the point and got a nice pass from Brian Bachnak from behind the net to one-time a shot past Brookings goalie Ryan Rubic. JC MacLean also picked up an assist on the goal.

Midway through the 2nd period, Zach Kennedy scored his 11th goal of the season as he knocked home the eventual game-winner after a loose puck scramble in front of the Brookings crease. Sturm and Jake Arroyo were credited with assists.

Brookings made it a one-goal game with less than eight minutes to go in regulation as Nate Colwell scored his third goal in as many games. A shot from the point from Kristoffer Brun was deflected right to Colwell in the low slot, who then sent a shot past Austin goalie Evan Smith.

However, it would be all Smith would allow on this night, as the Top Prospects goalie made 18 saves in the win, improving his record to 7-1-2 on the season. Kubic made 25 saves in the loss and saw his record fall to 8-11-5.
