Lone Star forward Andren makes NCAA DI commitment

December 21, 2015

By Nick Marek, Lone Star Brahmas

Lone Star Brahmas and NAHL second year forward Oskar Andren has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for five-time National Champions Boston University.  He will enroll immediately at BU and he will be eligible to play for the Terriers in January 2016.

“It’s an amazing feeling. Going to Boston University to play Division One hockey is something I’ve been dreaming of for a long, long time,” Andren said.  “To be able to get to go midseason, it’s just a great opportunity for me.”

“There’s a lot of good players in this league, and when you’re a top team, you’re going to lose players,” Head Coach Dan Wildfong added.  “That’s a good thing because they’re moving on to where they want to go.”

Andren, 20, leads Brahmas forwards in scoring with 22 points through 28 games this season.  The Brahmas will miss his production up front after the holidays, but his teammates were excited to hear the big news.

“My teammates are obviously very happy for me because it’s not everyday that someone from the NAHL goes to Boston University, but they have been so happy for me.  At the same time, I cannot thank my teammates enough because without them I wouldn’t be where I am right now,” Andren explained.

According to NAHL.com, this is the first time since the 2008-09 season that an NAHL player has committed to Boston University.

Lone Star’s coaching staff also gave high praises for their left winger moving up to the college level.

“Andren went through a lot and when the scholarship came, to reach that goal, we were all excited,” Wildfong said.  “We trusted him and believed in him and we’re proud of him.  He couldn’t have asked for a better school.”

The Terriers, currently the eleventh best team in the country according to USCHO, have an open roster spot due to an injury and they believe Andren can come in and play immediately.

The Danderyd, Sweden native has been in talks with Boston’s Associate Head Coach Albie O’Connell for a few weeks and the recruiting process concluded during the road trip to Wichita Falls this weekend.

“We told him to trust us.  I’ve seen Oskar improve every day in his board work and defensive play.  He’s going to be really good up there,” Wildfong said.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward took advantage of his leadership role this season in Brahmaland and became a strong all-around player.  He was also a key part of the Brahmas power play unit, notching nine points.  Boston University will need Andren to continue to grow and hopefully lead the Terries back to their second consecutive trip to the Frozen Four.

Before he moves to Massachusetts to be a part of the Dog Pound, Andren wanted to thank the fans for two memorable years in Texas and also thank his billet family, the Handlers, for being so supportive.

Andren will leave Brahmaland as the second all-time leading scorer behind former league MVP and Union College forward Sebastian Vidmar.  Andren scored 73 points through 89 games.

“It’s been a big transformation for me going from European hockey to playing over here (in the states) with a more aggressive style,” Andren said.  “Dan really pushes us every day and he knows what he’s doing.  Without him, I probably would not be where I am as of now.”

Thanks to his parent’s passion for business, Andren says he is planning on studying at the Boston University Questrom School of Business, which is ranked as the 25th best undergraduate business program in the country by Bloomberg Businessweek.

Boston University has developed dozens of NHL athletes, including Keith Tkachuk, Chris Drury, Rick DiPietro, Kevin Shattenkirk, and 2015 second overall pick Jack Eichel.  Former Team USA Olympic captain Mike Eruzione also attended BU.
