Saturday Scores: Jets soar into break with sweep
Springfield 1 @ Janesville 6 – Chris Dodero and Cullen Munson each had three-point nights as the Jets cruised to a weekend sweep of the Jr. Blues thanks to another 6-1 win on Saturday night. The Jets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 1st period goals from Keegan Miller (7) and Munson’s 9th of the season. After a scoreless 2nd period, the Jets scored four more times in the 3rd period, which included two from Dodero (6, 7) and others from Michael Maloney (16) and Jakov Novak (7). The lone Jr. Blues goal came from Brandon Puricelli (6). Jacob Barczewski made 30 saves in the win, while Garrett Nieto made 18 saves in the loss in his Jr. Blues debut. Boxscore
Austin 2 @ Bismarck 4 – Despite being outshot 41-23, the Bismarck Bobcats rode the hot goaltending of Camden Haugenoe to a 4-2 win and weekend home sweep of the Bruins. Haugenoe made 39 saves in the win. Bismarck opened the scoring in the 1st period with a goal from Jiei Halliday (6). Austin tied the game briefly on AJ Drobot’s 8th goal of the season. However, the Bobcats regained the lead less than two minutes later on Tristan Ashbrook’s 4th goal of the season. The Bobcats seized control in the 2nd period with two more goals from Matthew Barry (10) and Tobias Fladeby (14). The other Austin goal came from Tanner Dufault. MN Magicians 3 @ Coulee Region 2 – The Minnesota Magicians came from behind to defeat the Chill 3-2 and complete a weekend home-and-home sweep. The Magicians scored twice in the 3rd period to erase a 2-1 deficit to win, which included goals from Will Hammer (11) and Brendan Skarda (10). Thomas Altounian (4) scored the other goal for Minnesota, which came in the 2nd period. The Chill had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 thanks to goals from Larry Jungwirth (9) and Marshal Plunkett (5). Ivan Prosvetov made 35 saves in the win, while Todd Scott made 34 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Wichita Falls 3 @ Lone Star 4 (SO) – The Brahmas increased their lead in the South Division thanks to a 4-3 shootout win on Saturday, which completed a weekend sweep of the Wildcats. Lone Star opened the scoring early in the game with Frank Trazzera’s 2nd goal of the season. Wichita Falls then grabbed a 2-1 lead with back-to-back goals from Jonathan Bendorf (10) and Ilya Skvortsov (9). Early in the 3rd period, the Brahmas regained a one-goal edge thanks to a pair of goals just :32 seconds apart from Pete Kessel (15) and Aidan Spellacy (4). The Wildcats knotted the game at 3-3 later in the 3rd period with Ryan Orgel’s 6th goal of the season. Lone Star’s Austin Kamer had the lone goal in the shootout. Alec Calvaruso made 17 saves in the win in a relief appearance, while Jared Dempsey made 44 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Amarillo 5 @ Topeka 2 – Cole Lussier scored twice and Eric Cooley had three points as the Bulls completed a weekend road sweep in Topeka thanks to a 5-2 win on Saturday. The teams traded goals in the first two periods with Devon Fields (2) scoring first for Topeka in the 1st period and Cooley (3) answered back for the Bulls in the 2nd period. The Bulls then blew the game wide open with four, 3rd period goals, including two from Lussier (2, 3) and others from Jake Nitche (4) and Brendan Walkom (10). Jeff Makowski (11) scored the other goal for the RoadRunners. Nikita Babintsev made 20 saves in the win, while Ryan Snowden finished with 35 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Fairbanks 5 @ Northeast 1 – The Ice Dogs completed a three-game sweep of the Generals thanks to a convincing 5-1 win on Saturday. Josh Benson made 28 saves in the win. After an opening goal from Kohei Sato (6) have Northeast the lead, it was all Ice Dogs in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Cayden Cahill scored twice in the 2nd period to give Fairbanks the lead and Ryan Kero (6), Hampus Eriksson (6) and Hunter Wendt (8) all added 3rd period goals. Aston 1 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 3 – The Knights turned the tables on the Rebels from the night before as Colt Hanks made 45 saves in a 3-1 win. After a scoreless 1st period the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period on goals from Khristian Acosta (8) and Andrew Jackson (5). The Rebels answered before the period was done with their lone tally from Adam Peck (2). Reed Robinson added his 5th goal of the season late in the 3rd period on an empty-net. Aston goalie Mareks Mitens made 26 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Kenai River 1 @ New Jersey 3 – The Titans salvaged a split of their weekend home series against the Brown Bears thanks to 27 saves from Harrison Feeney in a 3-1 win. New Jersey scored in each period, which included goals from Maxim Andreev (8) in the 1st period, Andrew Husted (4) in the 2nd period and a 3rd period empty-net goal from Ryan Wheeler (3). The lone Brown Bears goal came from Tyler Rock (8) late in the 3rd period to spoil Feeney’s shutout bid. Robbie Goor took the loss in goal for Kenai River, making 23 saves. Boxscore
Minot 3 @ MN Wilderness 2 – Thanks to 36 saves from Lucas Murray, the Minot Minotauros salvaged a weekend split of their road series in Cloquet with a 3-2 win. Minot jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals in each period, which included a 1st period goal from Reid Stefanson (13), a 2nd period goal from Chase Springman (6) and a 3rd period goal from Colton Berg, his 1st of the season. The Wilderness made a comeback attempt thanks to two goals from Jesse Farabee (9, 10) within a :37 second span in the 3rd period, but the Minotauros held on for the win. Corpus Christi 5 @ Shreveport 1 – Brad Power scored twice to help the IceRays pick up a 5-1 win in Shreveport on Saturday and leave the weekend with three of a possible four points. The Mudbugs scored first with their lone goal of the game from Brendan VanSweden (5) in the 1st period. After that, it was all IceRays, which included a goal in the 2nd period from David Thompson (13) and four more goals in the 3rd period, including the two from Power (9, 10) and others from Mason Krueger (10) and Brendan Miller (3). Tomas Vomacka had to make just 15 saves in the win, while John Roberts made 21 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Brookings 1 @ Aberdeen 0 – In a goaltender’s duel on Saturday, it was Brookings netminder Josh Boyko stopping all 41 shots that came his way for his 3rd shutout of the season as the Blizzard salvaged a weekend split thanks to a 1-0 win in Aberdeen. Wings netminder Forbes Ploszaj was almost as equally as good, making 29 saves in the loss. The lone goal of the game came late in the 2nd period from Cade Borchardt, who scored his 15th goal of the season. Boxscore
