Aston goalie Mitens makes NCAA DI commitment

April 13, 2017

Aston Rebels goalie Mareks Mitens set a new NAHL single-season record with 11 shutouts in 2016-17.

The Aston Rebels, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that goaltender Mareks Mitens has committed to play NCAA Division I Ice Hockey for the Lake Superior State Lakers, who play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). His commitment begins in the fall of 2017.

It has been a banner year for the 19-year-old rookie from Ventspils, Latvia. He led the NAHL in wins (31), goals against average (1.63) and shutouts (11). The eleven shutouts set a new NAHL single season record for most shutouts in a season.

He also played for his native Latvia in the World Junior Championships back in December. He played in five games and was the backbone of his team. He faced the third most shots in the tournament (170), and he was named Player of the Game for one of his games.

“I am thankful for this opportunity,” stated Mitens. “I’m looking forward to this new experience and playing for coach Whitten. I also have so many people to thank who have helped make this a reality. I would like to thank my family, friends, coaches and teammates for their support through the years. I also would like to sincerely thank coach Coombs and the Rebels organization for all of their help,” concluded Mitens.

“I’m so happy for Mareks,” stated Rebels head coach Joe Coombs. “He is one heck of a goaltender and his compete level is through the roof. He is great teammate. Lake State is getting a quality person and hockey player,” concluded Coombs.

Lake Superior State University is located in Sault Sainte Marie, MI. Its head coach is Damon Whitten. The Lakers had an overall record 11-18-7 record this past season. LSSU has won three NCAA Frozen Four National Championships.
