Lone Star forward York makes NCAA DI commitment

June 8, 2017
The Lone Star Brahmas, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that forward Troy York has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for the 2017-18 season. The two-year Brahma becomes the 11th player from this year’s squad to commit to an NCAA program.

“Obviously I’m super excited to be heading to RPI in the fall,” York said. “It’s a dream come true to get a D1 commitment but there’s a lot of work left.”

“I think it’s a great pick up for RPI,” head coach Dan Wildfong chimed in. “Troy has proven that he can score at every level he’s gone through and there’s no doubt that he can score at the college level as well. I am very proud of him and excited to watch his next journey.”

York undoubtedly put plenty of pucks in the opposition’s net. He finished second on the Brahmas in goals scored with 29 and registered 49 total points. York was also selected to and played in the 2017 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the South Division team, where he had a goal in two games.

The Plano, Texas native also struck when it mattered most, leading the league with nine game-winning goals and maybe none bigger than the overtime winner against Corpus Christi in the deciding Game 5 of the South Division Final.

But York was far more than a one-dimensional player for the Brahmas, as he learned how to play better off the puck through his two seasons with Lone Star.

“I learned a lot playing here for Dan. He taught me how to play a complete game not only with the puck but without it. And playing juniors only an hour from home is always nice for family and friends to be able to come watch me play.”

York went on to say how much he appreciates the Brahmas family and how he would never trade the last two years for anything.

“Of course I’d like to thank my family for the support they’ve given me throughout my journey,” York added. “I’d like to thank the entire Brahmas staff, especially coach Dan Wildfong and Al Rooney because without them none of this would be possible. I would also like to thank the fans for coming to support us, rain, snow or shine. Y’all made the ‘Shoebox’ the best rink in the NAHL.”

York was highly recruited by the Brahmas when he played for the Dallas Stars Elite team, registering 95 points through his T1EHL career. When he transitioned to junior hockey, he proved that he had the skill to compete at even the highest level.

“For Troy, I think things came easy to him at the beginning and then I think he really bought in to competing every shift, every day, and making it a lifestyle. That really helped his transition to be a really good player in our league. It’s important that he has that mindset going into college. He’s going to have to train and be even more ready and I think he’s made those steps here and he’ll do it there to be successful,” Wildfong said.

What made York so successful is how he learned to embrace his role in Texas. He could run top line power play minutes and block a crucial postseason shot when he needed to. Developing his game is something Troy hopes to accomplish in Troy, New York.

“Hopefully I will bring some scoring, but I think playing a 200 foot game at the next level is key so I hope to go in and be a good player in both ends of the ice,” York said.

From the academic side, York says he is looking forward to the challenge in the classroom.

“They have an impressive business program at RPI so I will probably do management or something in the business school,” York added.

York becomes the 31st Brahma in a four year stretch to commit to a Division I program and the first to attend RPI.
