Friday Finals: Generals shutout Rebels for first playoff win

Jon Bendorf had four points, including a hat-trick, to lead the Aberdeen Wings to a 6-0 win in Game 1 of their Central Division Semi-Final series against Minot.

East Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: Northeast 3 @ Philadelphia 0 (Northeast leads series, 1-0) – The Northeast Generals made the most of their first ever Robertson Cup Playoff game as they went on the road and stole home ice back thanks to a 3-0 shutout win over the #1-seeded Rebels. Generals goalie David Fessenden was the star of the night, stopping all 24 shots that came his way as the Generals took a 1-0 series lead. After a scoreless 1st period, the Generals jumped ahead 2-0 in the 2nd period with two goals less than two minutes apart from Jeff Skinner and Michael Higgings. Colin McCabe would add an insurance goal in the 3rd period to complete the win. Rebels goalie Ryan Keane took the loss, making 17 saves.
 
Central Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: Minot 0 @ Aberdeen 6 (Aberdeen leads series, 1-0) – The Central Division regular season champs flexed their muscles on Friday night in a convincing 6-0 shutout win over Minot as forward Jon Bendorf recorded a hat-trick and had an assist to give the Wings a 1-0 series lead. After a scoreless 1st period, the Wings put the pedal to the metal in the 2nd period as they recorded all six goals in the middle frame in a 16-minute span, which included three from Bendorf and others from Nathan Burke, Adam Pitters, and Joey Molenaar. Wings goalie Matt Vernon did the rest, making 25 saves in the shutout. Minot goalie Samu Lonkila took the loss with 16 saves in two periods. Reod Waszczenko stopped all 8 shots in the 3rd period.
 
Central Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: MN Wilderness 1 @ Austin 2 (Austin leads series, 1-0) - Alex Schilling made 20 saves to lead the Bruins to a close Game 1 win over the visiting Wilderness. Austin went ahead late in the 1st period with the game’s first goal from Valdemar Ahlberg. The lead increased to 2-0 with a 2nd period goal from Alex Mella. The Wilderness made a game of it midway through the 3rd period on a goal from Ondrej Trejbal, but they could not get the equalizer past Schilling. Ryan Fanti got the Game 1 start for the Wilderness and made 34 saves in the loss.
 
Midwest Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: Springfield 0 @ Janesville 3 (Janesville leads series, 1-0) – Garrett Nieto stopped all 31 shots that came his way to lead the Jets to a 3-0 shutout win in Game 1 of their playoff series against the Jr. Blues. The two team’s were deadlocked in a 0-0 goaltending battle after two periods. In the 3rd period, the Jets got the game’s first goal from Sam Renlund. Less than a minute later, Simon Sagissor scored to make it 2-0 and Benji Eckerle added a goal late in the 3rd period. Jr. Blues goale Evan Fear made 27 saves in the losing effort.
 
South Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: Odessa 1 @ Lone Star 3 (Lone Star leads series, 1-0) – The defending champion Brahmas opened up their title defense with a 3-1 win on home ice as goaltender Mitchell Gibson was the difference, making 34 saves in the win. The Jackalopes led 1-0 after one period thanks to a power play goal from Matt Brown. However, it was all Brahmas the rest of the way. Jakub Sirota tied the game at 1-1 in the 2nd period and Justin Addamo and Kyle Hallbauer added 3rd period goals in the win. Alex Camarre got the start in goal for the Jacks and made 25 saves in the loss.
 
South Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: Corpus Christi 2 @ Shreveport 4 (Shreveport leads series, 1-0) – Mudbugs forward Ryan Burnett had a goal and two assists as the Mudbugs opened up a lead and held on for a 4-2 win on home ice in Game 1. Shreveport led 1-0 after one period on a goal from Cole Quisenberry. The lead swelled to 2-0 in the 2nd period as Cam Cook found the back of the net. Gueorgui Feduolov scored just :14 seconds into the 3rd period to make it a 3-0 edge.  The IceRays tried to keep pace with two goals in the 3rd period from Garrett Hallford and Rylee St. Onge, but a goal from Burnett secured the win. Mudbugs goalie Jaxon Castor made 22 saves in the win, while Chad Veltri made 41 saves in the loss.
 
Midwest Division Semi-Finals, Game 1: MN Magicians 2 @ Fairbanks 3 (Fairbanks leads series, 1-0) – A sold out crown saw the Ice Dogs edge the Magicians in Game 1 on Friday night, 3-2. Fairbanks opened the scoring just six minutes into the game on a tally from Daniel Haider. The Magicians had an answer with just over a minute left in the opening period on a goal from Bram Scheerer. The Ice Dogs took control in the 2nd period with back-to-back goals from Luke Orysiuk (power play) and Jax Murray to take a 3-1 lead. The Magicians didn’t go away as just :25 seconds after Fairbanks made it 3-1, Chris Konin scored on the power play to make it 3-2. The Magicians could not find the equalizer in the 3rd period as the Ice Dogs went onto the Game 1 win. Josh Benson made 15 saves in the win, while Isaiah Saville played very well in the loss with 42 saves.
