Black Bears, Mudbugs improve playoff position with Sunday wins

December 16, 2018

Shreveport Mudbugs defenseman Jacob Skolnik scored his first goal of the season on Sunday to help his team to a 3-1 win.

Maryland 4 @ Northeast 1 – The Maryland won their third straight game and moved into sole possession of the 4th and final playoff spot in the East Division with a 4-1 win on Sunday, completing a weekend road sweep of the Northeast Generals. Luke Mountain scored twice to pace the Black Bears to the win. Maryland started strong and never looked back as they led 2-0 after one period with goals from Jonathan Young and Luc Salem. After a scoreless 2nd period, the Black Bears padded their lead in the 3rd period with a pair of goals from Mountain. Maryland’s shutout bid was spoiled late in the 3rd period with Charlie Reid’s first goal of the season for the Generals. Black Bears goalie Kevin Lake made 28 saves in the win, while Generals goalie Marko Sturma made 29 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Lone Star 1 @ Shreveport 3 – Thanks to a 3-1 win on Sunday in the rubber match of a three game home series against Lone Star, the Shreveport Mudbugs took two of three games on the weekend to move back into sole possession of 2nd place in the South Division. After a scoreless 1st period, the Mudbugs got on the board in the 2nd period as defenseman Jacob Skolnik wired home his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. Lone Star tied the game midway through the 3rd period on a goal from Thomas Daskas. However, the Mudbugs found some late 3rd period heroics via the power play as Tim Khokhlachev scored the game-winner with just over a minute remaining and Gueorgui Feduolov would add an empty-net goal for insurance in the 3-1 win. Mudbugs goalie Maiszon Balboa made 27 saves in the win, while Seth Eisele made 33 saves in the loss. Boxscore
