Former NAHL, Knights coach Huffman named head coach in AHL

December 18, 2018

New Lehigh Valley Phantoms head coach Kerry Huffman spent time as a coach in both the NAHL and NAPHL.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL) have announced former NAHL coack Kerry Huffman (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights) will serve as acting head coach, effective immediately.

Huffman will assume the duties of Scott Gordon, who was named Interim Head Coach of the Philadelphia Flyers on December 17th.  The process of identifying and hiring an Interim Head Coach of the Phantoms for the remainder of the 2018-19 AHL season is underway.  In addition, Kjell Samuelsson will assist the Phantoms coaching staff during this transition period.

Huffman is in his third season as Assistant Coach with the Phantoms. Huffman, 49, produced 37 goals, 108 assists, 145 points and 361 penalty minutes across 401 career NHL games during time with the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and Ottawa Senators. A first-round selection (#20 overall) by Philadelphia in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, he tallied 23 goals, 61 assists, 84 points and 124 penalty minutes in 207 career games with the Flyers.

Prior to serving as an assistant coach for the Phantoms, Huffman spent a season as the Assistant Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights in the NAHL.

Huffman’s resume with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton extended for three seasons. In that time he also served as a head coach at the U16 level in the NAPHL, assistant coach at the U18 NAPHL and NAHL levels, general manager and director of player development. Prior to coming aboard he served as a volunteer consultant.

“The Knights are a great organization with a lot of really good people," said Huffman. "Louis DeNaples is an owner who puts the players' needs first. Tom Kowal is a coach and a friend that I've learned from. We've learned a lot from each other. You're lucky when you work with people like that."
