NAHL announces Bauer Hockey Divisional Stars of the Week

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Divisional Stars of the Week presented by Bauer Hockey for the week ending February 10, 2019.  The Divisional Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2018-19 regular season that honors the top performing players in each of the four NAHL divisions. Only players that are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the Divisional Players of the Week award.

Central Division Star of the Week: Stepan Pokorny, forward, Aberdeen Wings

Aberdeen Wings forward and NAPHL grad Stepan Pokorny, 18, had a big weekend as he helped the 1st place Wings take three of four points in their home-and-home series against Brookings. The 5’11/185 lbs. native of Kolin, Czech Republic had five points, including four goals and an assist to go along with a +3 rating in the two games. On Friday, Pokorny had a season-high four goals in a 6-5 overtime loss. On Ssaturday, he picked up an assist on one of Aberdeen’s two goals in a 2-1 win. For the season, Pokorny has 33 points in 41 games played. “Stepan continues to mature as a player as the season goes on. He plays a very heavy game, which makes him extremely tough to play against. Stepan is a player we will continue to look for to be a key contributor down the stretch,” said Wings head coach Scott Langer.

East Division Star of the Week: Carson Briere, forward, Johnstown Tomahawks

Thanks to a three-game home sweep of the Maryland Black Bears, the Johnstown Tomahawks moved closer to clinching the East Division regular season title. The usual suspects were at it again this weekend for Johnstown, including forward Carson Briere, 19, who had a huge weekend with eight points in the three wins, which included five goals (2 game-winners) and three assists. On Friday, the 5’8/175 lbs. native of Haddonfield, Pennsylvania, had the game-winning goal and two assists in a 8-2 win. On Saturday, he had an assist in a 3-2 win, and then on Sunday, he had four goals, including the game-winner in a 7-5 win. For the season, Briere, who will be playing in the 2019 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament is 3rd in league scoring with 70 points in 45 games played. “Carson had a heck of a weekend playing a major factor in three wins for our team. His ability to find different ways to produce all year, especially in clutch situations, has been very impressive. Sunday, he had a special game scoring four goals, including one of the nicest individual efforts we’ve seen all year on the game-winning goal. He continues to provide us with high end production and contributions to team success which will hopefully bring him to a much deserved NCAA Division I commitment,” said Tomahawks head coach Mike Letizia.

Midwest Division Star of the Week: Mattias Sholl, goaltender, Fairbanks Ice Dogs

Thanks to a couple of home wins over the Topeka Pilots, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs ran their winning streak to three straight games and moved just five points behind the Minnesota Magicians for 1st place in the Midwest Division. 18-year-old netminder Mattias Sholl started and won both games, giving up just a single goal in the process. On Friday, the 5’10/160 lbs. native of Hermosa Beach, California, stopped all 17 shots that came his way for his second shutout of the year in a 4-0 win. On Saturday, he stopped 35 of 36 shots in a 4-1 win. For the weekend, Sholl stopped 52 of 53 shots. Sholl has a 7-1-4 record to date with a 2.21 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. “Mattias was solid in both games. I think he really stood out on Saturday and he was there when the team needed him. He has progressively gotten better as the season has gone along, so we are confident his best hockey is ahead of him,” said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart.

South Division Star of the Week: Alex Peterson, forward, Amarillo Bulls

Amarillo Bulls forward and Holy Cross commit Alex Peterson, 20, helped his team widen their lead atop of the South Division by taking three of a possible four points in a weekend home series against the Lone Star Brahmas. The 5’11/183 lbs. native of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, had three points and was a +4 in the series. On Friday, Peterson had a goal in a 5-1 win. On Saturday, he assisted on both Amarillo goals in a 3-2 overtime loss. For the season, Peterson is tied for 2nd in team scoring with 44 points. “Alex has been one our most consistent players all season. He does so much more than produce points for us. He is a top penalty kill forward for us, an alternate captain, and one of the veteran players that has instilled the culture that was necessary for us turn our program around. He will be an outstanding addition to the College of the Holy Cross both in the classroom and on the ice,” said Bulls head coach Rocky Russo.
