Wings blank Wilderness on Thursday, 5-0

Matt Vernon made 16 saves in his league-leading 7th shutout of the season on Thursday night.

Aberdeen 5 @ MN Wilderness 0 – The Aberdeen Wings stayed alive in the hunt for the NAHL’s overall regular season title thanks to a dominating 5-0 shutout over the Minnesota Wilderness on Thursday night. Five different players scored for the Wings and goaltender Matt Vernon stopped all 16 shots that came his way for his league-leading 7th shutout of the season. It was also the 40th win of the season for Vernon.
 
The Wings scored early and often in the 1st period as Brad Belisle opened the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal less than three minutes into the contest. It was Belisle’s 33rd goal of the season. John Sladic and Adam Pitters would add other goals in the 1st period to push the Wings lead to 3-0 after the first 20 minutes.
 
Joe Strada scored his 18th goal of the season in the 2nd period and Jonathan Bendorf added a 3rd period goal. Thomas Rocco and Stepan Pokorny each added a pair of assists in the win.
 
Wilderness goalie Ryan Fanti made 38 saves in the loss.
