Wilderness goaltender Fanti makes NCAA DI commitment

May 22, 2019

Minnesota Wilderness goaltender Ryan Fanti played in both the NAHL and NAPHL Top Prospects Tournaments during his career.

The Minnesota Wilderness of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that goaltender Ryan Fanti has committed to play NCAA Division I Hockey for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Fanti will join the reigning NCAA Division I National Champions for the upcoming 2019-20 season.

Fanti, 19, has been a key player on the Wilderness in the NAHL for the past two seasons. The 6’2/190 lbs. native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, appeared in 75 regular season games for the Wilderness since 2017.

This past season, Fanti posted a 19-18-2 record in 37 games played with a 2.70 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. During his rookie campaign in 2017-18, he posted an 18-9-1 record with a 2.60 goals against average with a .922 save percentage.

He was also selected to play in the 2018 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the Central Division team.

Fanti is another shining example of the success of the NAPHL to NAHL Ladder of Development. Prior to playing in the NAHL, Fanti spent two full seasons playing in the NAPHL for the Thunder Bay Kings 18U team. He also played in the 2016 NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament for the North Division team. His performance in the NAPHL led to his signing a tender with the Wilderness during the 2016-17 season.

“Ryan is one of the most deserving kids I have ever had the honor of coaching,” said Wilderness Head Coach Dave Boitz. “UMD is getting an outstanding goaltender and an even better human being. We wish nothing but success for Ryan as he takes this next step in his hockey career and life.”

Fanti will join a host of Bulldogs that have previously played in the NAHL with the Minnesota Wilderness, including: Cole Koepe, Koby Bender, Louie Roehl, and Kobe Roth.
