NAHL announces Bauer Hockey Divisional Stars of the Week

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Divisional Stars of the Week presented by Bauer Hockey for the week ending October 27, 2019.  The Divisional Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2019-20 regular season that honors the top performing players in each of the four NAHL divisions. Only players that are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the Divisional Players of the Week award.

Central Division Star of the Week: Nico Appendino, defenseman, Bismarck Bobcats

20-year-old Bismarck Bobcats defenseman Nico Appendino helped his club pick up three of four points this weekend in a road series in St. Cloud to maintain their lead atop the Central Division. The 5’7/171 lbs. native of Kempten, Germany, totaled four points in the two games, which included one goal and three assists. On Friday, Appendino had a goal and an assist in a 5-4 shootout loss. On Saturday, he had two assists, including one on the game-winning goal in a 5-1 win. “Nico has done a great job for this team. His play-making ability and hockey sense are at the forefront of his game. His compete level is what makes him a great defenseman,” said Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie.

East Division Star of the Week: Hampus Rydqvist, defenseman, Maryland Black Bears

Maryland Black Bears defenseman Hampus Rydqvist, 20, had a great weekend, which helped his club to a weekend home split against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights. The 5’9/190 lbs. native of Gothenburg, Sweden put up four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in the two games and was also a +2. On Friday, Rydqvist had a goal and an assist in a 5-4 overtime loss. On Saturday, he scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 5-2 win, helping Maryland pick up three of four points during the weekend. “Hampus is a highly competitive individual and gives his full effort each and every time he steps on the ice. It is nice to see such a good person, and good player, be rewarded.  I know his teammates are very happy for him, as are our fans,” said Maryland head coach Clint Mylymok.

Midwest Division Star of the Week: Trent Burnham, goaltender, Chippewa Steel

Chippewa Steel goalie Trent Burnham, 19, helped his club to a weekend road sweep of the Janesville Jets, which helped the Steel extend their winning streak to a league-best eight straight games. The 6’0/163 lbs. native of Eagle River, Alaska, allowed just two goals in the two wins, stopping 50 of 52 shots during the weekend. On Friday, Burnham made 32 saves in a 2-1 overtime win, and then on Saturday he made 18 saves in a 4-1 win. With a 5-1 record this season, Burnham ranks 3rd in the NAHL in goals against average (1.32) and 4th in save percentage (.954). “Trent has been very good for us so far this season. He's made some big saves when we need him to and kept us steady when the other team makes a push,” said Steel head coach Carter Foguth.

South Division Star of the Week: Eric Huss, forward, Lone Star Brahmas

Lone Star Brahmas forward and Army commit Eric Huss, 20, had a big weekend against his former team. The 5’11/181 lbs. native of Dallas, Texas put up six points in a three-game road sweep against the Odessa Jackalopes. That included one goal and five assists for a total of six points and a +4 rating. Huss scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win on Thursday, had three assists in a 4-0 win on Friday, and two more assists in a 7-4 win on Saturday. “It was good for Eric to go back to Odessa and have success this past weekend. He has put in a lot of hard work on and off the ice to improve as a player and that is definitely having an impact on his production and offensive output,” said Brahmas head coach Dan Wildfong.
