NAHL Weekend Preview

November 22, 2019
22 games are on the schedule on Friday and Saturday as the NAHL continues its schedule into late November.

Now that the schedule is a third of the way over for the 2019-20 regular season, the standings are starting to take form and teams are starting to separate themselves, specifically towards the top of the pack.

The leaders of all four divisions have not only started separated themselves from the pack, but are also on some incredible streaks.

Speaking of incredible, more NAHL players made NCAA Division 1 commitments this past week, bringing the season total to date to 128 players for the 2019-20 season.

In the Central Division, the 1st place Bismarck Bobcats continue to roll with a 13-0-1 record in their last 14 games and will be on the road this weekend to face the St. Cloud Blizzard, who have lost seven straight. Another team that has been playing some good hockey as of late is the Aberdeen Wings, who will go outside of the division to host the Chippewa Steel from the Midwest. The Wings swept the Steel in Chippewa the first weekend in November. The Austin Bruins look to get back into playoff position as they have a home-and-home series with the Minnesota Magicians from the Midwest Division. The Magicians have lost seven straight games. Both Minot and Minnesota Wilderness are idle this weekend.

In the East, the 1st place New Jersey Titans are 11-0-1 in their last 12 and look to continue to pad to their division lead as the host the Maine Nordiques. The Nords are just one point out of the 4th and final playoff spot. The 2nd place Johnstown Tomahawks will host the Maryland Black Bears for a weekend series with Maryland just two points out of the 4th and final playoff spot in the East. The final series has the Jamestown Rebels at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights. The Knights, who have won just three of their last 10 games, have dropped down to the .500 mark. The Northeast Generals are idle this weekend.

In the Midwest, the aforementioned Chippewa Steel are in Aberdeen and the Magicians have a home-and-home series with Austin. Inside the Division, the hottest team is the Kenai River Brown Bears, who not only enjoy a four point lead atop the division, but have won eight straight games including last night’s 5-3 win over Fairbanks. The two teams will play twice more in Kenai River this weekend on Friday and Saturday. The other team on a hot streak in the division is the Janesville Jets, who will put their five-game winning streak on the line with a series in Springfield against the Jr. Blues, who are four points back of the Jets for the 4th and final playoff spot.

In the South Division, the 1st place Lone Star Brahmas got a scare, but came from behind to defeat the New Mexico Ice Wolves on Thursday, 5-4 to increase their South Division lead to six points with two more games remaining in New Mexico on Friday and Saturday. The Amarillo Bulls are 5-0-2 in their last seven games and look to continue their hot streak as they host the Odessa Jackalopes this weekend. A battle for playoff position goes down in Corpus Christi this weekend as the IceRays host the Shreveport Mudbugs with the Mudbugs just a point behind the IceRays for the 4th and final playoff spot. Topeka is idle this weekend.
