Sunday Wrap-Up: New Mexico finishes sweep of Mudbugs

Maine forward Stefan Owens had three goals in a weekend sweep of Danbury to help the Nordiques clinch a playoff spot.

Shreveport 1 @ New Mexico 4 – The Ice Wolves showed they are for real and as good as anyone in the South Division right now as they defeated the division-leading Shreveport Mudbugs on Sunday 4-1 to complete a three-game weekend home sweep. New Mexico goalie Owen Parker, who won two of the three games in the weekend set, made 41 saves in the win. The Mudbugs were first on the board as Braiden Dorfman scored late in the period on the power play. The Ice Wolves controlled the 2nd period, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead with goals from Alex Gomez and a power play goal from Nikolai Dulak. In the 3rd period, New Mexico would add two more goals from Joey Larson and Dillan Bentley to complete the 4-1 win and sweep. Mudbugs goalie Cole Hudson made 19 saves in the loss.

Maine 4 @ Danbury 1 – The Nordiques completed a three-game road sweep of the Jr. Hat Tricks and clinched a spot in the Robertson Cup Playoffs in the process as they got 38 saves from Tyriq Outen in a 4-1 win. The Nordiques took a 1-0 lead thanks to a shorthanded goal in the 1st period from Casper Soderling. Maine added two more special teams goals in the 2nd period as Makem Demers scored on the power play and Stefan Owens added another shorthanded goal to make it 3-0. In the 3rd period, the Jr. Hat Tricks netted their lone goal midway through the period as Alex Duncan scored his 4th goal of the season. The Nordiques finished off the scoring late in the game as Aidan Connolly scored to make the final 4-1. Danbury goalie Andrew Pichora made 35 saves in the loss.

Wichita Falls 4 @ Amarillo 5 – The Bulls scored four unanswered goals to erase a 4-1 lead and defeat the Wichita Falls Warriors, 5-4 in the rubber match of their three-game weekend series. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead with two goals early in the 1st period from Drake Usher and Thomas Weis. The Bulls cut into the lead before the end of the period to make it 2-1 as Harrison Scott scored his 15th goal of the season. The Warriors seemed in control in the 2nd period as goals from Jeffrey Bertrand and Drew Vieten made it 4-1. The Bulls stormed back thanks to two goals in the 2nd period from Ryan Coughlin and Cooper Fensterstock to cut the lead down to 4-3, and then added two more goals in the 3rd period including one from Greg Japchen and the game-winner from Fensterstock for his second goal of the game to complete the comeback win. Cullen DeYoung, who came into the game in relief of starter Hunter Garvey, made 9 saves in the win, while Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 34 saves in the loss.
