Wolverines, Brown Bears spoil Midwest home openers

Anchorage 3 @ Chippewa 2 – Wolverines goalie Shane Soderwall made 34 saves to lead his team to a 3-2 road win in Chippewa’s home opener. The Steel jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from JJ Grainda and Hudson Zinda. The Wolverines responded with three unanswered goals from David Tolan in the 2nd period and Kade Shea and Wilson Dahlheimer in the 3rd period. Steel goalie Adam Gajan made 30 saves in the loss.

Kenai River 2 @ Janesville 1 (OT) – Brown Bears goalie Nils Wallstrom made 32 saves to lead his team to a 2-1 overtime win in Janesville on Thursday night, handing the Jets their first loss of the season. After a scoreless 1st period, the Brown Bears struck first late in the 2nd period as Ryan Finch scored his 4th goal of the season. Janesville would tie the game midway through the 3rd period as Jimmy Doyle netted his 3rd goal of the season. In the overtime, it took just :46 seconds for the Brown Bears to win it as Bryce Monrean scored his first goal of the season. Jets goalie Selby Warren made 33 saves in the loss.
