Johnstown defenseman DesRochers makes NCAA DI commitment

November 28, 2022

The Johnstown Tomahawks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman and assistant captain Tyler DesRochers has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Since being acquired from the Northeast Generals last season, DesRochers, 19, has been a powerhouse playmaker for the Tomahawks, with 36 points (3 goals, 33 assists) in 41 career games with the club. He also posted five assists in five games in the first round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs last season.

So far during the 2022-23 season, the 6’0/185 lbs. native of Howell, NJ, has 13 points in 17 games played.

“Excited to commit to play hockey and further my education at Mercyhurst University. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this point in my career,” said DesRochers on social media.

“Tyler has been an exceptional part of our team now for parts of two seasons and is fully deserving a new opportunity to play Division I hockey,” said Head Coach Mike Letizia. “When he joined our team last year in January he made an immediate impact, producing a point per game from the back-end and winning our team’s Defenseman of the Year award. After being drafted into the USHL this summer, he made the decision to return early in the season as he felt the situation to impact our team was greatly there for him, as well as creating the ability to receive a college hockey opportunity. He has delivered now on both.”

The Howell, New Jersey native will be following in the footsteps of multiple former Tomahawks to join the Lakers in Dusty Geregach, Carson Briere and Dalton Hunter.

“His return has helped our team achieve more success and now he has been rewarded with a DI commitment,” added Letizia. “Tyler is an outstanding hockey player and person, and I am so proud of him. It’s another great day for our organization as Tyler becomes our next NCAA Division I committed player.”
