Sherwood/NAHL North Player of the Week February 8, 2010
Jimmy McCusker - Marquette Rangers
Marquette forward Jimmy McCusker struck for five goals and two assists as the Rangers skated to a 2-1 record. On Thursday, the Novi, Mich., native notched a pair of goals and the game-winner in the shootout in a 5-4 victory over the Traverse City North Stars. The next night, the 20-year-old put home two more goals as Marquette doubled up Motor City, 4-2. McCusker, who was recently acquired from Alpena, wrapped up his week with a one-goal, one-assist performance in a 3-2 loss to the Metal Jackets. He was also a plus-6 for the week.
“Jimmy brings a bunch of experience to our locker room and that carried over onto the ice,” said Rangers head coach Kenny Miller. “He’s a guy we’ll count on down the stretch to help us move up the ladder in the North Division.”

Ralphs Feibergs - Texas Tornado
Texas defenseman Ralphs Feibergs recorded five assists as the Tornado picked up five of six points against Fairbanks. On Wednesday, the Riga, Latvia, native pocketed a pair of assists in a 7-6 overtime loss. Two nights later, the 18-year-old tallied an assist as the Tornado bested the Ice Dogs in a shootout, 2-1. On Saturday, Feibergs connected for two more helpers in a 5-2 victory. He was also a plus-3 for the week.
“Ralphs has been an impact player since joining us last month,” said Tornado head coach Tony Curtale. “He’s a presence not only in the defensive zone, but offensively as well.”

Dylan Porter - Owatonna Express
Owatonna forward Dylan Porter connected for three goals and three assists as the Express skated to three wins. In an 8-2 victory over the Albert Lea Thunder on Tuesday, the Rosemount, Minn., native tallied two goals and a pair of assists. Three nights later, the 20-year-old recorded an assist in a 6-0 triumph over North Iowa. Porter put home another goal on Sunday as the Express downed the Outlaws, 7-0. He was also a plus-4 for the week.
“Dylan really stepped to the forefront last week and played a big role in our success,” said Express head coach Pat Cullen. “We’re hoping there’s more to come from him as we start nearing the homestretch.”

Matt Friese - Alaska Avalanche
Alaska forward Matt Friese tallied two goals and an assist as the Avalanche celebrated a two-game sweep over Kenai River. On Friday, the Wasilla, Alaska, native recorded an assist in a 6-5 shootout victory. The next night, the 18-year-old rang up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Avalanche bested the Brown Bears, 6-1. The University of Alaska-Anchorage (WCHA) recruit was also a plus-3 on the weekend.
"Matt was a force at both ends of the ice last weekend," said Avalanche head coach Dave Boitz. "He's really starting to establish himself as one of the top forwards in the league."

Matt Hemingway - Owatonna Express
Owatonna goaltender Matt Hemingway backstopped the Express to a pair of wins in his two starts, turning aside 53 of 55 shots. On Tuesday, the Alexandria, Minn., native made 23 saves in an 8-2 victory over the Albert Lea Thunder. Three nights later, the 19-year-old stopped all 30 shots as the Express blanked the North Iowa Outlaws, 6-0.
“Matt made a number of outstanding saves for us,” said Express head coach Pat Cullen. “He was exceptional in all facets of his game and the rest of the team played with a lot of confidence in front of him.”

Michael Henderson - Alpena IceDiggers
Alpena forward Michael Henderson rang up a hat trick, including the game-winning goal, and an assist as the IceDiggers skated to a 6-2 win over Motor City on Saturday in their only game of the weekend. The 20-year-old from Bloomington, Ind., who was acquired recently from the St. Louis Bandits, was also a plus-3.
“Michael has been a terrific addition to our lineup,” said IceDiggers head coach Jack Fritsche. “He has tremendous offensive skills and we’re counting on him to play a big role for us down the stretch.”

Scott Deur - Texas Tornado
Texas forward Scott Deur came through with three goals and three assists as the Tornado dropped a pair of games to Topeka. On Friday, the Big Rapids, Mich., native rang up a goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss. The next night, the 21-year-old connected for two more goals and two assists as the Tornado fell to Topeka, 8-5. He was also a plus-2 on the weekend.
“Scott has been a leader for us this year, on and off the ice,” said Tornado head coach Tony Curtale. “He came up big last weekend and we’re going to need more of the same from him as the playoffs approach.”

Nardo Nagtzaam - Alexandria Blizzard
Alexandria forward Nardo Nagtzaam struck for two goals and three assists as the Blizzard skated to a two-game sweep over Owatonna. On Friday, the Netherlands native registered a pair of assists in an 8-1 triumph. The next night, the 19-year-old, who was recently acquired from the Alaska Avalanche, potted two goals, including the game-winner, as the Blizzard downed the Express, 4-1. He was also a plus-3 on the weekend.
“Nardo has been a good fit for our team, on and off the ice,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “He'll definitely be able to contribute offensively at the college level.”

Kyle Politz - Fairbanks Ice Dogs
Fairbanks forward Kyle Politz put home two goals and an assist as the Ice Dogs skated to a two-game sweep over Wichita Falls. On Friday, the Elko, Minn., native recorded a goal in a 3-2 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old tallied another goal and assisted on Jon Waggoner’s game-winner as the Ice Dogs again bested the Wildcats, 3-2.
“Kyle is a great-skating forward who will be an impact player for us down the stretch,” said Ice Dogs head coach Josh Hauge. “He’s a hard-working kid and we’re expecting more good things from him in the coming weeks.”

Robert Tadazak - Alexandria Blizzard
Alexandria goaltender Robert Tadazak backstopped the Blizzard to a two-game sweep over Owatonna, turning aside 42 of 44 shots. On Friday, the Lapeer, Mich., native made 10 saves in an 8-1 victory. The next night, the 19-year-old stopped 32 shots as the Blizzard downed the Express, 4-1.
“Robert was exceptional last weekend,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “He came up with the all the saves he needed to make, as well as a few big ones, and played a key role in our success.”

Tanner Kero - Marquette Rangers
Marquette forward Tanner Kero rang up three goals and two assists as the Rangers skated to a two-game sweep over Alpena. On Friday, the Hancock, Mich., native scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 victory. The next night, the 17-year-old put home another goal and two assists as the Rangers doubled up the IceDiggers, 4-2. The Michigan Tech University recruit was also a plus-1 for the weekend.
“Tanner has been an impact player for us all year," said Rangers head coach Kenny Miller. "He's a true goal-scorer with great vision."

Jason McAloon - Wichita Falls Wildcats
Wichita Falls forward Jason McAloon potted three goals and an assist as the Wildcats celebrated a two-game sweep over Texas. On Saturday, the Elk Groves, Ill., native notched a goal in a 4-2 victory. The next day, the 19-year-old who played his first two games with the Wildcats since being acquired from the Owatonna Express connected for two more goals and an assist as Wichita Falls outlasted the Tornado, 6-5.
"Jason has been a great addition to our squad," said Wildcats interim head coach Mike Flanagan. "He was in the right place at the right time and he provided a much-needed spark to our offense.”

Anthony Iaquinto - Albert Lea Thunder
Albert Lea forward Anthony Iaquinto struck for three goals and an assist as the Thunder skated to a 2-1 record. Held scoreless on Friday - a 5-2 loss to Janesville - the Brighton, Mich., native notched a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and an assist the next night in a 5-1 triumph over the Jets. On Sunday, the 20-year-old scored another goal as the Thunder downed the North Iowa Outlaws, 4-1. He was also a plus-2 on the weekend.
"Anthony has provided us the veteran leadership our team needs as we make a late run at a playoff spot," said Thunder associate coach Zac Headrick. "He's a tough physical player with a great shot."

Mitch Torrel - Wenatchee Wild
Wenatchee forward Mitch Torrel connected for three goals as the Wild skated to a two-game sweep over Fairbanks. On Friday, the Monticello, Minn., native tallied the game-winning goal in a 6-2 win. The next night, the 19-year-old Air Force Academy recruit rang up two more goals, including the game-winner, as the Wild bested the Ice Dogs, 5-1.
"Mitch is an excellent power forward who is extremely difficult to keep off the scoresheet when he plays with an edge and uses his size, speed and shot," said Wild associate head coach Ryan McKelvie. "In order for our team to be successful, we need Mitch to have more games like he had last weekend."

Joe Rogers - Albert Lea Thunder
Albert Lea goaltender Joe Rogers backstopped the Thunder to a pair of wins in his two starts, turning aside 79 of 81 shots. On Saturday, the Marysville, Mich., native made 44 saves in a 5-1 victory over the Janesville Jets. The next night, the 19-year-old Notre Dame University recruit stopped 35 shots as the Thunder downed the North Iowa Outlaws, 4-1.
"Joe stepped up for us big," said Thunder associate coach Zac Headrick. "Our goalies are playing very well right now and Joe's ability to see the puck in traffic and control rebounds accounted for his solid play."

Marquette forward Andrew Kolb connected for four assists as the Rangers celebrated a two-game sweep over Albert Lea. On Friday, the Toledo, Ohio, native registered a pair of assists in a 5-1 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old picked up two more helpers as the Rangers downed the Thunder in a shootout, 4-3. The Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament selection was also a plus-2 for the weekend.
"Andrew was one of our best players last weekend,” said Rangers head coach Kenny Miller. “When he’s on the ice, he’s a threat to create offense every shift.”

Topeka forward Tony Thomas struck for two goals and two assists as the RoadRunners split a two-game set with Springfield. Held scoreless on Friday - a 3-2 loss - the 19-year-old from South Lyon, Mich., connected for two goals and two assists, including one on Bryce Johnson’s game-winning marker, as the RoadRunners bested the Jr. Blues, 5-2. He was also a plus-2 on the weekend.
“Tony played extremely well on Saturday night and did a little bit of everything for us,” said RoadRunners assistant coach R.J. Enga. “He was great on the power play and did a lot of the little things to help us get back on track."

Johan Skinnars - Kenai River Brown Bears
Kenai River forward Johan Skinnars recorded four assists as the Brown Bears skated to a three-game sweep over Fairbanks. On Thursday, the Sweden native picked up a pair of assists, including one on Jesse Ramsey’s game-winning goal, in a 3-2 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old tallied two more helpers - one on Raymond Stenehjem’s game-winner - in another 3-2 triumph over the Ice Dogs. Skinnars, a Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament selection who potted the game-winning goal in the Brown Bears’ 3-2 shootout victory on Saturday, was also a plus-2 on the weekend.
"Johan was exceptional last weekend,” Brown Bears head coach Oliver David said. "He’s a high-end talent, but, most importantly, he’s an exceptional team guy.”

Dan Sullivan - Texas Tornado
Texas goaltender Dan Sullivan backstopped the Tornado to a two-game sweep over Wenatchee, turning aside 73 of 75 shots. On Friday, the York, Pa., native made 41 saves in a 3-1 triumph. The next night, the 20-year-old stopped 32 shots in regulation and overtime and seven of 10 in the shootout as the Tornado bested the Wild, 2-1.
“Sully made big saves at critical moments and stood on his head in Saturday’s shootout,” said Tornado assistant coach Jason Bloomingburg. “He was definitely our MVP of the weekend.”

Motor City forward RJ Kleiman struck for two goals and an assist as the Metal Jackets downed Marquette on Friday, 5-3. Held scoreless the night - a 3-2 victory over the Rangers - the 19-year-old from Dewitt, Mich., was a plus-1 for the weekend. He will represent the North Division at next week’s Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.
“RJ had a great weekend for us,” said Metal Jackets head coach David Cole. “He’s a talented offensive player and has scored some big goals for us this season and we’re hoping there’s more to come.”

Topeka forward Erik Higby potted two goals and three assists as the RoadRunners celebrated a two-game sweep over Texas. On Friday, the New Braunfels, Texas, native scored a goal and two assists in a 5-2 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament selection notched the overtime game-winning marker and an assist as the RoadRunners downed the Tornado, 3-2.

Alexandria forward Steve Zierke recorded a goal and five assists as the Blizzard skated to three victories. On Friday, the Brooklyn Park, Minn., native rang up two assists in a 5-2 win over North Iowa. The next night, the 19-year-old netted a goal as the Blizzard downed the Outlaws, 3-2. On Sunday, the Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament selection picked up three more assists in a 4-1 triumph over the Owatonna Express. Zierke was also a plus-4 on the weekend.
“Steve has really picked up his game lately,” said Blizzard assistant coach Jeff Crouse. “He’s a very skilled player who can skate and, when he uses his speed, he has the ability to take over a game.”

Jeff Jubinville - Wenatchee Wild
Wenatchee forward Jeff Jubinville connected for four goals and two assists as the Wild skated to a 2-1 record against Wichita Falls. On Wednesday, the Edmonton native put home the game-winning goal and an assist in a 4-3 victory. Two nights later, the 20-year-old recorded a hat trick, including the game-winning marker, as the Wild dropped the Wildcats, 6-1. A Bemidji State University recruit, Jubinville wrapped up his week with an assist in a 6-3 loss on Saturday. He was also a plus-2 on the weekend.
“Jeff had an excellent weekend,” said Wild associate head coach Ryan McKelvie. “He played with a ton of energy and was one of the hardest workers on the ice in every game. He’s a veteran player who led by example.”

Chris Kamal - Alexandria Blizzard
Alexandria goaltender Chris Kamal backstopped the Blizzard to three victories, turning aside 80 of 85 shots. On Friday, the Alpharetta, Ga., native made 28 saves in a 5-2 triumph over North Iowa. The next night, the 20-year-old stopped 23 shots as the Blizzard downed the Outlaws, 3-2. Kamal, a Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament selection, made 29 saves in Alexandria’s 4-1 win over the Owatonna Express on Sunday.
“When Chris plays, he gives us a chance to win every game,” said Blizzard assistant coach Jeff Crouse. “He played very solid and kept things simple last weekend. We’re looking forward to watching his improvement continue as the year goes on.”

Garrett Thompson - Traverse City North Stars
Traverse City forward Garrett Thompson struck for three goals and three assists as the North Stars fashioned a 4-1 record. On Monday, Dec. 28, the Traverse City native recorded a pair of goals and an assist in a 7-4 win over Marquette. The next night, the 19-year-old scored the game-winning marker as the North Stars downed the Rangers, 3-2. After tallying an assist in a 5-2 victory over the Alpena IceDiggers on New Year’s Eve and being held scoreless in a 2-1 loss to Motor City on Saturday, Thompson added another assist on Sunday in a 4-1 triumph over the Metal Jackets. He was also a plus-3 for the week.
“Garrett is emerging as a team leader,” said North Stars head coach Anthony Palumbo. “He’s really provided us with the offensive boost we needed coming back from the holiday break.”

Erik Higby - Topeka RoadRunners
Topeka forward Erik Higby connected for three goals and four assists as the RoadRunners celebrated a three-game sweep over Wichita Falls. After being held scoreless on New Year’s Eve - a 5-2 RoadRunners win - the New Braunfels, Texas, native recorded two assists the next night, including one on Nate Milam’s game-winning goal, in a 7-2 triumph. On Saturday, the 20-year-old rang up a hat trick and two more assists - another on a Milam game-winner - as the RoadRunners blanked the Wildcats, 8-0. He was also a plus-4 for the week.
“Erik was solid again last weekend,” said RoadRunners assistant coach R.J. Enga. “Whether he’s generating offense or working hard defensively, he’s playing very well in all areas."

Ryan Jacobson - Bismarck Bobcats
Bismarck forward Ryan Jacobson potted three goals and two assists as the Bobcats skated to three wins. On New Year’s Eve, the Denver native recorded two goals in a 4-3 victory over the Alexandria Blizzard. The next night, the 19-year-old connected another goal and two assists, including one on Dominic Panetta’s overtime game-winning marker, in a 4-3 triumph over North Iowa. Held scoreless on Saturday - a 3-2 win over the Outlaws - Jacobson was a plus-4 for the week.
“Ryan had his best weekend as a Bobcat,” said Bobcats head coach Byron Pool. “He regularly contributes on the scoreboard, but his all around-play was phenomenal. He was physical, great in his own end, he looked after the puck and he distributed it nicely.”

Alex McLean - Wenatchee Wild
Wenatchee defenseman Alex McLean rang up a goal and three assists as the Wild skated to a two-game sweep over Alaska. On Saturday, the Duluth, Minn., native recorded three assists, including one on Nolan Youngmun’s game-winning goal, in a 6-1 victory. The next day, the 19-year-old tallied a goal as the Wild downed the Avalanche, 5-1. He was also a plus-4 on the weekend.
“It was great to see Alex put up some numbers last weekend because he’s consistently been very good for us at both ends of the ice,” said Wild associate head coach Ryan McKelvie. “He’s a very skilled and hard-working defenseman who can play in any offensive or defensive situation.”

Drew Strandburg - Traverse City North Stars
Traverse City goaltender Drew Strandburg won all three of his starts, turning aside 84 of 89 shots. On Tuesday, the Thunder Bay, Ontario, native made 23 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Marquette Rangers. Two nights later on New Year’s Eve, the 20-year-old stopped 32 shots as the North Stars downed the Alpena IceDiggers, 5-2. On Sunday, Strandburg steered aside 29 shots in a 4-1 triumph over the Motor City Metal Jackets.

Josh Bussell - Marquette Rangers
Marquette forward Josh Bussell connected for two goals and five assists as the Rangers fashioned a 2-1 record against Alpena. On Friday, the Detroit native recorded a goal and two assists, including one on Tanner Kero’s game-winning marker, in a 3-2 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old recorded two assists, including one on Andrew Kolb’s game-winner, as the Rangers downed the IceDiggers, 8-1. Bussell picked another goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss on Sunday. He was also a plus-5 on the weekend.
“Josh is a scoring threat every night and, as a veteran leader on this team, we expect him to put up numbers like he did last week,” said Rangers head coach Kenny Miller. “His hard work in all three zones paid off for him.”

Jared Rickord - Springfield Jr. Blues
Springfield forward Jared Rickord put home three goals and four assists as the Jr. Blues picked up five of six points against Wichita Falls. On Friday, the Skokie, Ill., native notched a goal and an assist in a 4-0 victory. The next night, the 20-year-old tallied another goal and two more assists as the Jr. Blues downed the Wildcats, 7-2. Rickord, a Bentley University recruit, recorded two points (goal, assist) in a 4-3 overtime loss on Sunday.

The next night, the 18-year-old who was picked up in a trade from Fairbanks earlier in the season, stopped 23 shots as the Bandits downed the Metal Jackets, 5-4.
“Tyler has been a huge presence for us since we acquired him,” said Bandits assistant coach Rocky Russo. “His performance has allowed us to feel even more comfortable with Garrett (Bartus’) decision to move on to (the University of Connecticut after the holiday break). Mac Carruth - Wenatchee Wild
Wenatchee goaltender Mac Carruth helped lift the Wild to the NAHL Showcase Tournament championship after turning aside 74 of 76 shots en route to three wins. On Wednesday, Carruth, from Shorewood, Minn., stopped all 21 shots as the Wild blanked the Alexandria Blizzard, 3-0. The next day, the 17-year-old made 31 saves in Wenatchee’s 3-1 victory over the Marquette Rangers. The University of Minnesota Duluth (WCHA) recruit played his final game of the Showcase on Friday, making 22 saves as the Wild downed the U.S. Under-17 Team, 5-1.
“As one of our returning players, Mac has mentally matured and has evolved into one of our team leaders,” said Wild assistant coach Ryan McKelvie. “I'm excited to see him improve throughout this season into a big-time goaltender.”

Jordan Bancroft - Janesville Jets
Janesville forward Jordan Bancroft struck for two goals and an assist as the Jets split a two-game series with the Traverse City North Stars. On Saturday, the Grand Forks, N.D., native tallied the first goal in Jets history as Janesville celebrated its first-ever victory, 4-3. The next
night, the 18-year-old notched a goal and an assist as Janesville fell to the Stars, 4-3. He was also a plus-2 on the weekend.

Brian Nehring - Albert Lea Thunder
Albert Lea forward Brian Nehring recorded the game-winning goal as the Thunder opened its season with a 7-2 victory over the Owatonna Express. The 19-year-old from Hopedale, Mass., was also a plus-2.

Zach Smith - Alaska Avalanche
Alaska forward Zach Smith connected for two goals and three assists as the Avalanche celebrated a three-game sweep over the Kenai River Brown Bears. On Friday, the Anchorage native recorded two assists in a 7-2 win. The next night, the 18-year-old tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory. Smith wrapped up his weekend on Sunday with a one-goal, one-assist effort in a 7-3 triumph over the Brown Bears. He was also a plus-4 for the weekend.

Joe Rogers - Albert Lea Thunder
Albert Lea goaltender Joe Rogers, a University of Notre Dame (CCHA) recruit, turned aside 30 shots in the Thunder¹s 7-2 victory over the Owatonna Express. The 19-year-old from Marysville, Mich., played in 11 games last season for the Motor City Machine.
