Scoring five goals in a game is a rarity in the NAHL. In the past eight seasons, it has happened only three times, including twice this year. The most recent came this past Saturday night as Topeka RoadRunners forward Andrew O’Leary, 20, scored five goals in a win over New Mexico. However, the most impressive part of the night was the fact that the native of Norwich, Vermont accounted for all five of his team’s goals in the 5-1 win, including the game-winner. The performance doubled O’Leary’s (6’1/210) goal total for the entire season and helped the RoadRunners sweep the Mustangs and move into 2nd place in the South Division. Topeka only had 19 shots in the game and seven of them came off O’Leary’s stick. “It was nice to see Andrew have some success because he has worked very hard to try and get back what he gained last season,” said RoadRunners head coach Scott Langer. “Everything went right on Saturday, but he did the work by putting himself in position to score. He was good the night before too, but on Saturday he used his speed on a few goals and let his abilities take over and great things happened.”
It has been a couple of years since an NAHL defenseman has reached the 15-goal plateau, but that’s exactly what Bismarck Bobcats defenseman Donald Olivieri, 20, did this past weekend as helped Bismarck to a three-game road sweep in Austin and Alexandria. For the weekend, the defenseman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had three goals (including one game-winner) an assist and was a +2. On Friday, Olivieri (5’10/183) registered an assist in a 6-1 win at Austin. On Saturday, Olivieri scored Bismarck’s second goal on the power play in a 4-2 win and sweep of the Bruins. Olivieri saved his best game for last on Sunday, as he scored twice, including the game-winning goal, as Bismarck snapped Alexandria’s 11-game winning streak with a 4-3 road win. For the season, Olivieri has 27 points (15 goals, 12 assists) in 33 games played. His 15 goals leads all NAHL defensemen. “Donald handles and shoots the puck as good as any defenseman I have seen in anyone at this level,” said Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie. “When we needed a big goal, he always seems to set it up or score it. He also has worked very hard on playing better defensive hockey and has improved in that area as well to become a very good all-around defenseman in this league.”
The ‘go-to’ guy on the Fairbanks blueline this year has been 20-year-old defenseman Sean O’Rourke. A for as much as the Ice Dogs get praised for their high-powered offense, it was the defenseman O’Rourke who helped the Ice Dogs take two of three games in Alaska against the Avalanche this past weekend and creep closer to 1st place in the West Division. On Thursday, O’Rourke chipped in with an assist on the game-winning goal in a 3-0 shutout win. On Friday, the Alta Loma, California native had two more assists in a close 6-5 loss. On Saturday, O’Rourke (5’9/180) again chimed in with two more assists in a 7-2 win. For the weekend, O’Rourke registered five assists in three games and was a +3. He leads Fairbanks in scoring for defensemen with 27 points (4 goals, 23 assists) in 29 games played. “Sean showed great leadership and was key part of winning the series against Alaska,” said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart. “Sean always knows where his teammates are on the ice and is an essential part of our power play. He is a fierce competitor and one of the heart and souls of the team.”

Kalamazoo forward Andrew Graves, 20, helped the Jr. K-Wings to a perfect weekend as they won all three of their games to creep closer to the top spot in the North Division. For the week, Graves recorded 9 points (2 goals, 7 assists) and was a +6 for the weekend. On Friday, the Allen Park, Michigan native recorded four assists (including one on the game-winning goal) as Kalamazoo beat the Michigan Warriors on the road, 6-2. On Saturday, Graves (5’8/151) had a goal and an assist in a 5-3 home win over the Warriors. On Sunday, Graves scored again and added two more assists in a 5-2 home win over Traverse City. Graves in second on the Jr. K-Wings in scoring with 43 points in 39 games played and leads the team in assists with 24. “Andrew has been a very consistent performer for us and he is really starting to show some veteran leadership,” said Kalamazoo head coach Marc Fakler. “There is a premium for veteran guys who can score and lead in this league and Andrew brings that to the table. He had an outstanding week.”
20-year-old Kalamazoo forward Brock Raffaele had his breakout weekend of the year by helping the Jr. K-Wings to three wins. In the three games, Raffaele had 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) and was a +7. The Cadillac, Michigan native began the week with a two goal (including the game-winner) one assist performance in a 6-2 road win at Michigan. The next game, Raffaele (5’10) had a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 5-3 home win over the Warrirors. On Sunday, he recorded three assists (including another one on the game-winner) in a 5-2 home win over Traverse City. Raffaele either scored or assisted on each of the game winning goals during the weekend. In just six games with the Jr. K-Wings this season, Raffaele is averaging two points per game with 12 points. “Brock has fit like a glove since joining us and his line has been clicking,” said K-Wings head coach Marc Fakler. “He has proven to be a very good team guy and he is very dynamic on the ice. He is a player that is fun to watch play the game.”
There is no hotter team in the NAHL than the Alexandria Blizzard, and a big reason why has been the play of 19-year-old forward Reid Sturos. The Brighton, Michigan native helped the Blizzard to three more wins over the weekend, including a win on Saturday against division-leading Bismarck. For the weekend, Sturos (6’2/180) recorded six points (3 goals, 3 assists) and was a +3 in three weekend wins. Sturos began the week with an assist in a 3-1 home win over Minot on Thursday. The next night, Sturos recorded a power play goal, this time in a 6-2 home win over the Minotauros. However, Sturos saved his best game of the weekend (and maybe of the year) for Saturday night’s clash with Bismarck. Sturos had two goals and two assists in a 6-4 win over the Bobcats. For the season, Sturos has recorded 29 points in just 31 games played with the Blizzard this season. “Reid has been great since his arrival here after the Showcase and he understands how to contribute and buys into our team concept,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “He is a rare combination of size and speed that he puts to good use on a nightly basis.”

Having already earned 3rd star honors back on September 27th, Wenatchee goaltender Robert Nichols, 19, put together a perfect weekend in goal as he was able to post shutouts in back-to-back starts and help the Wild to a three game road sweep of the Dawson Creek Rage. On Friday, the Dallas, Texas native stopped all 27 shots in a 2-0 win. On Sunday, he made 13 saves in a 3-0 win over the Rage. Nichols (5’11/180) set a new individual single-season Wenatchee record for shutouts with his sixth of the season. Nichols surpassed Brandon Jaeger, who recorded five shutouts last season. For the week, Nichols was perfect stopping all 40 shots he saw. Nichols continues to have a record-breaking season. He currently leads in the NAHL in both goals against average (1.48) and save percentage (94.3%). “It makes it easier for the entire team when Robert is playing like he is. He is a smart goalie and can play the puck as well as anyone I have seen,” said Wild head coach John Becanic. “To have the goalie tandem like we do really sheds some light on how well these guys are playing in goal and hopefully it leads to some NCAA Division I opportunities.”
Corpus Christi netminder Anthony Stolarz, 17, who recently committed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the WCHA, arguably had his best weekend of the year as he helped the IceRays to three wins over the weekend to continue their current winning streak and keep a firm grip on a playoff spot in the South Division. On Friday, the Jackson, New Jersey native allowed just one goal on 30 shots as the ‘Rays beat Odessa 2-1 in a shootout. The next night, Stolarz (6’5/200) stopped all 40 shots that came his way as Corpus Christi shutout the Jackalopes, 3-0. On Sunday, Stolarz started his 9th consecutive game and made 33 save in a 4-1 defeat of the Texas Tornado. For the weekend, Stolarz stopped an amazing 102 out of 104 total shots good for a 98.1% save percentage for the week and 0.64 goals against average. “He delivered a complete weekend for us and continues to give us a chance to win each game,” said IceRays head coach Justin Quenneville. “Since his commitment to Nebraska-Omaha he has been playing his best hockey of the season. I think he is still out to prove he is the best goalie in the country at this level.”
University of Massachusetts-Lowell recruit Adam Chapie, 20, helped the New Mexico Mustangs to their first weekend sweep since late November as the forward from Oxford, Michigan recorded five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in a two-game home-and-home sweep against Wichita Falls. On Saturday, Chapie (6’1/175) recorded a goal and two assists as the Mustangs picked up a big 5-2 road win in Wichita Falls. On Sunday, Chapie recorded two more goals, including the game-winner as New Mexico swept the Wildcats with a 7-4 win in New Mexico. Chapie was also +5 on the weekend and scored his team-leading fourth game-winning goal. For the season, Chapie leads the Mustangs in scoring with 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists) in 37 games played. “It has been a great year for Adam and he seems to be consistently producing every weekend,” said Mustangs head coach Jason Kersner. “He has been such a big part of this team in his two years here and has stuck through it to make us feel like we have the pieces to be a playoff contender this year helped by his leadership.”

For the second straight week, Topeka RoadRunners netminder Peter Traber, 18, has been honored as the league’s #1 star of the week, and for good reason. The Houston, Texas native shined once again as helped lead his RoadRunners to a weekend home sweep of the red-hot St. Louis Bandits and increase Topeka’s winning streak to four games. On Friday, Traber extended his shutout streak to 180 minutes by shutting out the Bandits 4-0 with 21 saves en route to his third consecutive shutout in as many starts, equaling the NAHL season-high. The next night, Traber’s (6’1/180) shutout streak ended at an amazing 217 minutes and 59 seconds, but he still managed to allow just the one goal on 23 shots as Topeka won again, 4-1. For the weekend, Traber stopped a combined 43 of 44 shots for a 97.7% save percentage and a goals against average of 0.50. “It was a new experience for Peter to be a part of a great rivalry with St. Louis and he answered the challenge,” said Topeka head coach Scott Langer. “St. Louis had some great opportunities and Peter was able to shut the door and give us some much needed momentum. The guys played with a lot of confidence because they know that Peter was there to back them up.”
Aberdeen Wings netminder Frederick ‘Hunter’ Leisner, 19, netted his first three stars award of the season thanks to helping the Wings sweep a key road series at Coulee Region this past weekend to stay in the thick of the Central Division playoff hunt. On Friday, the Garland, Texas native made 44 saves through regulation and overtime, and then stopped three of four Chill shooters to pick up the 4-3 win in the shootout. The next night, Leisner (6’0/170) stopped all 30 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Wings blanked Coulee Region, 3-0. For the weekend, Leisner stopped 74 of a possible 77 shots for a 96.1% save percentage and posted a goals against average of 1.44. Despite having a record of11-11-3 this season, Leisner has a 93.2% save percentage this season, good for 4th best in the NAHL. “In his two years here in Aberdeen, Frederick has grown tremendously as a goaltender,” said Wings head coach Pete Sauer. “He does a great job of not only stopping the first shot, but controlling his rebounds, as well as limiting those second chances for the opponent. He was huge for us this past weekend.”
Now in his second season with the team, Amarillo Bulls forward TJ Sarcona, 19, has been an integral part of helping the Bulls to the top record in the league so far this season, and this weekend was no exception. The West Islip, New York native recorded six points (2 goals, 4 assists) and was +6 in two games this past weekend, as Amarillo earned three of four points to increase their South Division lead to 15 points. Both of Sarcona’s goals over the weekend were shorthanded and came in the same game, Friday’s 10-3 win over Corpus Christi. His two shorties were part of Amarillo’s four shorthanded goals in Friday’s win, which set a new Amarillo hockey record at the pro or junior level. Sarcona is currently 2nd on the Bulls in scoring this season with 36 points (15 goals, 21 assists) in 34 games played. “I think TJ has really learned a lot in his time in Amarillo,” said Bulls head coach Dennis Williams. “He is the one of, if not the best all-around hockey player we have on the roster. He plays and works hard at both ends of the rink enabling us to utilize him in all situations we have during a game.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Brooks Behling, forward, Amarillo Bulls – Brandon Brossoit, forward, Alaska Avalanche - Tommy Burke, goaltender, Bismarck Bobcats – Lawrence Cornellier, forward, Odessa Jackalopes – Wehebe Darge, forward, Alaska Avalanche - Dan Dupell, forward, Topeka RoadRunners – Tanner Fahlstedt, forward, Wichita Falls Wildcats – Brandon Flood, forward, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Brock Kautz, goaltender, Janesville Jets – Ken MacLean, goaltender, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Connor McBride, forward, Janesville Jets – Mike Moroso, forward, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Josh Obregon, forward, Odessa Jackalopes – Sean O’Rourke, defenseman, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Nolan Valleau, defenseman, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Beau Walker, forward, Corpus Christi IceRays – Dan Zawacki, forward, Bismarck Bobcats.
Week of January 2, 2012

The Topeka RoadRunners and goaltender Peter Traber, 18, had a weekend to remember. Head coach Scott Langer recently has made it clear that Traber has won the starting job and he responded this past weekend with a pair of back-to-back home shutouts against the Springfield Jr. Blues. On Friday, the Houston, Texas native stopped all 18 shots as Topeka narrowly edged Springfield, 1-0. The next night, Traber (6’1/180), was even better as he made 22 saves, including breakaway stops which led to his second straight shutout of the weekend in a 3-0 win. Both shutouts were Traber’s first two of the season. He improved his record to 11-5-0 overall this season with a 2.16 goals against average, which ranks 6th in the NAHL and also a 91.3% save percentage. “Peter has consistently improved his game since coming to play for us,” said RoadRunners head coach Scott Langer. “He possesses a lot of maturity on and off the ice. He is a big time competitor in net and has tremendous focus. Our players play well in front of him knowing he can stop the chances like Springfield had this past weekend.”
For almost three seasons now forward Jack Prince, 20, has been an integral part of the Texas Tornado. As a veteran of the last two NAHL Top Prospects Tournaments, Prince once again proved why he is one of the best players in the league this year this past week with another memorable individual performance. For the week, the native of England registered seven goals and one assist for eight points in three games as Texas went 2-1-0 for the week. On Wednesday, Prince recorded a hat-trick and added an assist as Texas beat Corpus Christi, 6-2. On Friday in Odessa, Prince was even better as he scored four goals, including three on the power play as Texas beat the Jackalopes, 9-1. Despite a Tornado loss on Saturday, the damage had been done by Prince, who kept the Tornado solidly in 2nd place in the South. For the season, Prince leads the Tornado with 44 points, is 4th in the NAHL in scoring and ranks 1st in power play goals with 10. “Jack understands how to play the game and understands how to score goals,” said Tornado head coach Tony Curtale. “He is a great leader and one of the best players I have had the pleasure to coach in my time in Texas.”
The NAHL goalie of the month for November, Jacob Meyers, 19, has not let off the gas pedal in December and this past weekend was evidence of that as he started and won all three Blizzard games to move Alexandria into 2nd place in the Central Division. On Friday, the Minnetonka, Minnesota native made 25 saves in a 7-1 home win against Minot. The next night, the 6’1, 180 lbs. goaltender made 30 saves in a big 5-2 road win at Aberdeen. On Sunday, in his third game in three nights, Meyers made 23 saves in a 2-1 home win over the Austin Bruins. Meyers lowered his goals against average to 1.91 for the season which ranks 4th best in the NAHL and his save percentage of 93% also ranks 4th. For the week, Meyers stopped a combined 78 of 82 shots for a 95.1% save percentage over the weekend and allowed just four goals in the three games for a 1.33 goals against average. “I think Jacob’s confidence builds with every week he plays,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “Coming off the break he was well rested, so I had no problem playing him in all three games, because we want to get one of the two top spots in the Central Division and wins are big right now.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Tucker Coborn, forward, Alexandria Blizzard – Michael Dery, forward, Corpus Christi Ice Rays – Mike Erickson, forward, Amarillo Bulls – David Gandara, forward, Chicago Hitmen – Joakim Jutras, goaltender, Texas Tornado – Bill Kent, forward, New Mexico Mustangs – Gabe Levin, forward, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Darren McCormick, forward, Janesville Jets – Austin Nelson, forward, Austin Bruins – JT Osborn, forward, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Ross Pavek, forward, Alaska Avalanche – John Rey, defenseman, Amarillo Bulls – Blake Roubos, forward, Wenatchee Wild – Tate Rusk, defenseman, New Mexico Mustangs – Connor Wright, forward, Alaska Avalanche.
Week of December 20, 2011

Janesville’s momentum from their overtime win over division-leading St. Louis back on December 11th carried right into this past weekend as they traveled to Chicago for a three-game road set against the Hitmen. Thanks in large part for forward Connor McBride, the Jets kept that momentum going with a sweep of all three games and kept pace for the division lead. McBride, 20, recorded nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) in the sweep and now is tied for the Jets team lead in scoring. The native of Hartland, Wisconsin struck for two goals and two assists in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, which the Jets won 6-4 and 8-2 respectively. On Sunday with the Jets down 3-1, McBride scored a key power play goal that fueled the Jets comeback to win 4-3. For the season the 5’10/175 lbs. forward has 29 points in 29 games played. This is McBride’s second year with the Jets. Last season, he was selected to compete at the 2011 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in Ann Arbor before sustaining an injury. “Connor had a very big weekend for us. I think he really got back on track after he scored the overtime winner against St. Louis last weekend,” said Jets head coach Dane Litke. “He is a streaky scorer so when he is working hard to get to the net, shooting more and playing with a lot of confidence. He is at the top of his game and helps us be a better team.”
Fresno has the #1 power play in the league as a big reason why may be the play of this week’s #2 star, defenseman Jeffrey Pauluk. This past weekend the native of Bloomington, Minnesota recorded five points (1 goal, 4 assists) from the blueline in two games as Fresno continued their current winning streak with a weekend road sweep at Dawson Creek. Pauluk, 19, was also a +4 during the weekend and he currently leads the Monsters in scoring for defenseman with 22 points in 22 games played. He ranks tied for 4th in the NAHL in defensive scoring. On Friday he recorded an assist in Fresno’s 5-3 win over the Rage. On Saturday, the 5’7/165 lbs. Pauluk had a shorthanded goal and three assists in an 8-5 win, which extended Fresno’s winning streak to four games. “I think Jeff has learned a lot in the two years he has been playing in the NAHL, and it is showing,” said Monsters head coach Eric Ballard. “He is more productive offensively, better defensively and is playing in every possible situation for us. He isn’t big, but he has the skill necessary to compete and play at the next level and has been the anchor for us all season long.”
Every team has its most valuable player and Aberdeen forward Cory Ward may be just that for the Wings this season. This past weekend, Ward, 18, helped the Wings sweep a home-and-home set with the Minot Minotauros as Aberdeen has now won six of their last seven games. Ward finished the weekend with five points (4 goals, 1 assist) in two games played and was a +4 on the weekend. On Friday, the Las Vegas, Nevada native recorded a goal and assist as the Wings beat Minot 4-3 in overtime. Ward scored the game-tying goal on a penalty shot with just one-second remaining in regulation. The next night, Ward recorded a hat-trick, which included goals in all three periods as Aberdeen beat Minot, 5-1. For the year, Ward leads the Wings in scoring with 39 points in 28 games played and he also ranks 5th in the NAHL in scoring. “I think Cory did a great job of finding the net, but what people don’t understand is how good he has been defensively,” said Wings head coach Pete Sauer. “Playing the defensive part of the game is just as important to him as scoring. He goes out of his way be physical and deliver a hit. He is the perfect example of how you should play two-way hockey and it’s one of the major reasons he obtained a scholarship. He is one of the best pressure players I have seen.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Anthony Appleyard, defenseman, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Jordan Bancroft, forward, Janesville Jets – Karl Beckman, defenseman, Amarillo Bulls – Riley Borer, forward, Fresno Monsters – Tyler Bruggeman, goaltender, Austin Bruins – Tommy Burke, goaltender, Bismarck Bobcats – Ben Carey, forward, Wenatchee Wild – Michael Dery, forward, Corpus Christi IceRays – Frank Dichiara, forward, St. Louis Bandits – Kyle Gattelaro, forward, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Tyler Green, goaltender, St. Louis Bandits – Gabe Levin, forward, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Peter Megariotis, goaltender, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Reid Mimmack, goaltender, Texas Tornado – Patrick Moore, forward, Bismarck Bobcats – Sean O’Rourke, defenseman, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – CJ Reuschlein, forward, Texas Tornado – Blake Roubos, forward, Wenatchee Wild – Anthony Stolarz, goaltender, Corpus Christi IceRays – Mike Taffe, goaltender, Amarillo Bulls – Nolan Valleau, defenseman, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Marcus Zelzer, goaltender, Aberdeen Wings.

A big part of last year’s success for the Michigan Warriors was thanks in large part to players like AJ White. As one of the returners to this year’s Warriors team, White, 19, knew he would play a key role, and thus far he has done so. The Dearborn, Michigan native leads the team in scoring with 33 points and this past weekend was his best offensive output of the season. White registered seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) in the pair of weekend games for the Warriors (both wins). On Friday, White recorded a goal and two assists in a 4-1 win at Traverse City. On Saturday, White recorded a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal, and an assist for a four point night in a 5-2 win over 1st place Port Huron. White has almost eclipsed last year’s point total and already has 19 goals, which is tied for 4th in the NAHL. “AJ has been one of the players that has had the most consistency for us this season,” said Warriors head coach Moe Mantha. “He worked hard in the off-season to come back a better, more well-rounded player and he is one of the leaders for this team.”
Josef Pontasch, 20, had one of his better weekends of the year as he extended his point streak to four games helping Springfield take two of three games from the Chicago Hitmen. The Perrysburg, Ohio native recorded seven points in three games as Springfield moved into 3rd place in the Midwest Division. On Friday, Pontasch recorded an assist in a 6-4 loss, however on Saturday the 6’1, 201 lbs. forward broke out for three assists in a 9-3 win by the Jr. Blues. On Sunday, Pontasch recorded a hat-trick, which included the game-winning goal in a 7-4 win. Pontasch is 3rd in scoring this season with 29 points in 28 games, just one point behind the team leaders. “Josef put a lot of work in the off-season, which has improved him as a player and made him more valuable to the team,” said Springfield head coach Joe Dibble. “He does the little things too… blocks shots, kills penalties, works on power plays… whatever he needs to do to help us win, he will do. It gives his teammates that extra motivation to work as hard has he does.”
Veteran goalie Tyler Bruggeman, 20, has been strong of late and this past weekend was no exception as he helped the Bruins take three of four points and move into 2nd place in the Central Division. The North Mankato, Minnesota native is in his second stint in the NAHL after leading the St. Louis Bandits to a Robertson Cup Tournament appearance back during the 2009-10 season. Bruggeman hasn’t allowed more than three goals in the game since early November and this past weekend was another example. On Friday, Bruggeman made a season-high 47 saves as the Bruins fell 3-2 in a shootout in Alexandria again the Blizzard. A night later, Bruggeman was even better as he stopped all but one shot making 24 saves against the high-powered Aberdeen offense in a 2-1 home win over the Wings. For the weekend, Bruggeman posted a 1.44 goals against average and a 95.9% save percentage, stopping 71 of a possible 74 shots. To date, Bruggeman is in the Top 10 in the NAHL in wins, goals against average and save percentage. “Tyler has done a good job on working on his rebound control and he really tries to slow the game down,” said Bruins head coach Chris Tok. “the team has confidence that if there is a breakdown he will more than likely come up with the big save for us.”

Chris Kerr, 19, had a week to remember in helping Wenatchee take five of six points in three games at home against the Dawson Creek Rage. The Penticton, British Columbia native began his weekend by posting a goal and an assist in Wenatchee’s 4-3 overtime win on Friday night. The next night, Kerr assisted on a goal in the Wild’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Rage. However, Kerr (6’0/185) saved his best performance of the week for last as on Sunday he scored four goals and added an assist for five points in Wenatchee’s 6-1 win over Dawson Creek. In the process, Kerr become the first player in Wild history to record four goals in a game. For the week, Kerr had five goals (including one game-winner) and three assists for eight points in three home games, as was also a +3. “Chris has been very consistent and got moved onto the #1 power play unit, so he was able to produce accordingly,” said Wild head coach John Becanic. “We rely on him for offense and he has been able to produce because he works hard and has a nose for the net.”
Veteran RoadRunners forward Brian Christie, 19, almost single-handedly helped take down the Corpus Christi IceRays as Topeka completed a weekend road sweep this past weekend. On Friday, the West Chester, Pennsylvania native recorded two goals, including the game-winning goal as time expired in overtime, to lead the ‘Runners to a 3-2 overtime win. Christie had won a face-off in the offensive zone with 1.1 seconds remaining and ripped home the game-winner as the horn sounded. The next night, Christie would again score the game-winning goal late in the 1st period and also add an assist in Topeka’s 4-1 win. For the weekend, Christie scored three goals, including both game-winners, and added an assist for four points and was also a +4 on the weekend. Christie leads the RoadRunners in goals with 14 this season. “Brian is playing a lot of minutes right now, but at the same time he has stepped up,” said RoadRunners head coach Scott Langer. “He is seeing the game well because is playing good, two-way hockey. He executed the game-winning goal on Friday to perfection, but it comes from hard work and being prepared for that situation.”
Odessa Jackalopes goaltender Connor Hellebuyck continues to be a shining light for the Jackalopes this season and this past weekend was no exception. Hellebuyck, 18, helped the Jackalopes take three of four points over the weekend in a series with the Wichita Falls Wildcats. The points helped Odessa move into the 4th and final playoff spot in the South Division. On Friday night, Hellebuyck made 45 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Wildcats. The Commerce, Michigan native also stopped seven of nine shooters in the shootout. On Saturday, Hellebuyck was even better, making 39 saves in a 2-1 win over Wichita Falls. To top the weekend off, Hellebuyck announced his commitment to NCAA Division I University of Massachusetts-Lowell, becoming the first player in the Jacks NAHL history to commit to an NCAA Division I school. “I think a lot of pressure was on Connor with scouts in the stands this past weekend, but he played like he has all season long… calm, cool and collected and under control,” said Odessa General Manager Joe Clark.

Over the past month, Blizzard goaltender Jacob Meyers, 19, has really thrived since accepting the starting role. It is no coincidence then that so has the Blizzard as a team and this past week was no exception. The Minnetonka, Minnesota native won all three of his starts, giving up just three goals in the three games and posting a 96.6% save percentage as the Blizzard beat Coulee Region, Aberdeen and Austin. On Wednesday, Meyers was perfect stopping all 27 shots in a 4-0 shutout at Coulee Region. On Friday, Meyers stopped 30 of 31 shots in a 4-1 home win over Aberdeen. On Saturday, Meyers completed his perfect week making 28 saves in a 5-2 home win over Austin. “Jacob has been very consistent and helped us win a lot of games in the last month,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “He seems to be always square to the puck has sound fundamentals. He plays under control, makes the first save and lets his teammates help out after that.”
Since his trade from Alexandria, Avalanche defenseman Jeff Bergh has been lights out for Alaska and has led their resurgence to the top of the West Division. This past week, the blueliner from Hallock, Minnesota scored four goals in three games, which included two game-winning goals in back-to-back games. Bergh, 19, picked up the game-winner on Monday as the Avalanche blanked the Dawson Creek Rage, 4-0. On Friday, Bergh put forth his best performance of the week, recording a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal as Alaska defeated 2nd place Kenai River on the road. “Jeff is a very dynamic, solid, two-way player who pays attention to details,” said Avalanche assistant coach Josh Petrich. “He has been a blessing in disguise since joining our team and he makes those around him better. Has really been one of the key ingredients in our recent success.”
The Amarillo Bulls own the best record in the league and Burlington, Ontario native Greg Gibson is a key reason why. Gibson, 20, posted five points this past week as the Bulls increased their lead in the South Division taking a possible five of six points in their three games. On Wednesday, Gibson recorded a goal and assist in a 4-3 overtime loss against Wichita Falls. After being held scoreless in Amarillo’s 6-2 win on Friday in Topeka, Gibson shined on Saturday, recording two goals (including the game-winner) and an assist as Amarillo swept the Roadrunners on the road with a 4-2 win. “Greg has really come into his own the last couple of weeks. He is shooting the puck more and can attack the opposition with his speed,” said Bulls head coach Dennis Williams. “We expect him to be a big contributor the rest of the season and really improve our special team play.”

Kujava shutout the Chill both on Friday and Saturday night and moved his currently shutout streak to 190+ minutes. On Friday, Kujava stopped all 17 Chill shots in a 4-0 win. On Saturday, the 19-year-old netminder from Green Bay, Wisconsin, made stopped all 15 shots in regulation and overtime before stopping four of five shooters in a 1-0 shootout win for the Jets. The two shutouts gave Kujava his league-leading sixth and seventh shutouts of the season. Kujava is third in the NAHL in goals against (1.53), second in save percentage (94.0%) and has the best record in the league at 14-1-1. “Tony was sick for a time a few weeks ago, but he has bounced back very nicely and a big reason why we are winning right now,” said Jets head coach Dane Litke. “Saturday was one of those classic games with both goalies playing unreal. Tony didn’t face as many shots, but he kept his composure throughout the game and came up big in the shootout.”
Amarillo put together a 3-1-0 record this past week with a grueling four road games in four nights. Brooks Behling, the NAHL’s leading goal scorer with 17 goals this season, played in three of those games and did not disappoint. On Thursday, the 20-year-old Behling recorded a shorthanded goal and added three assists for a four point night in Amarillo’s 8-2 win in Odessa. A night later, the native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, got even better as he recorded a power play goal, another shorthanded goal and the overtime-winning goal for a hat-trick as the Bulls beat the Texas Tornado, 4-3. On Saturday, Behling started the game, but was injured forcing him out of the early in the game along with Amarillo’s win on Sunday in Corpus Christi. Behling piled up four goals, including two shorthanded, and three assists for seven points in his three games played during the week. “Brooks is continuing to play well and playing with a sense of confidence,” said Bulls head coach Dennis Williams. “He is getting dirty goals and putting up numbers. We are putting him into more situations to be successful, and he has worked hard to become a legitimate leader and goal-scorer.”
Fairbanks scored a total of six goals in their two-game weekend road sweep against the Wenatchee Wild, and Ice Dogs forward Gabe Levin, 19, helped in the scoring of five of the six goals during the weekend to earn third star honors. On Friday, Levin scored a power play goal and assisted on two others (including the game-winner) as Fairbanks beat Wenatchee, 4-1. On Saturday, the forward from Marino del Ray, California, assisted on the game-winning goal, then scored a highlight reel goal on the power play as the Ice Dogs completed the sweep with a 2-0 shutout win. For the weekend, Levin had two goals and three assists for five points in two games. He is third in league scoring with 33 points and leads in the NAHL in assists with 25. “Gabe has demonstrated great work ethic and leadership qualities as our team captain,” said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart. “I think overall we played better as a team this past weekend than we did a few week ago at home against Wenatchee and Gabe was a big part of that. He is a 4.0 student and a sure- fire future Division I hockey player.”

Kyle Laslo, 19, had a spectacular week in goal for the North Stars. In the two games he started (both on the road), the Fenton, Michigan native allowed just one goal, posting a shutout and stopped 70 of a possible 71 total shots during the week. For the week, Laslo posted a .50 goals against average and a 98.6% save percentage. Laslo’s shutout came in first game of the week on Wednesday when he blanked Port Huron with a 33-save effort. Two nights later, Laslo made 37 saves in a 5-1 win at Michigan. Laslo currently ranks sixth in the NAHL in goals against average with a 1.92 goals against. He has been in goal for all eight of the North Stars wins this season. “Kyle has the ability to keep us in game, especially on the road,” said Traverse City head coach Chad Fournier. “He doesn’t give up bad goals and our guys play with a lot of confidence knowing that.”
There have been plenty of players in the NAHL that have paid their junior hockey dues, and new Wildcats goaltender Matt Leon is no exception. Leon, 19, spent the beginning of this season and all of last season in the NA3HL, where he was the league MVP for the Queen City Steam. Since his call up to the NAHL, Leon has been making the most of his opportunity, which included the Wildcats home games this weekend against Corpus Christi. The Charlotte, North Carolina native allowed just one goal in two games, posted his first NAHL shutout and stopped 66 of a possible 67 shots during the weekend as Wichita Falls swept the Ice Rays. For the week, Leon posted a .50 goals against average and a 98.5% save percentage. “I think once Matt started to see some shots and make some saves at this level, he really started to gain some confidence,” said Wildcats head coach Paul Baxter. “The best part of his game may be the mental side. He has the ability to block out the bad and move onto the next save. It is something I think he has gained through his experience playing junior hockey in the 3HL.”
This marks the second time this season Joe Kalisz, who is tied for the league lead in points with 29, has been honored as one of the three stars. This past weekend, Kalisz, 20, helped his Bandits team to a three-game road sweep of the Chicago Hitmen. The three wins helped the Bandits stay atop of the Midwest Division in 1st place. For the weekend, the Davison, Michigan native scored five goals (one game-winner) adding two assists for seven points and was +7 in the three wins. On Friday, Kalisz had two goals including the game-winner in a close 3-2 win over the Hitmen. Saturday, he added a goal and an assist in a 7-2 Bandits win. On Sunday, he chimed in with two goals and an assist as the Bandits completed a three-game sweep with an 8-5 win. “Joe has been a great leader on and off the ice for our team and he has been very consistent,” said Bandits head coach Jeff Brown. “Chicago has improved a lot and we worked very hard to win three games this past weekend.”

Week of November 7, 2011

The Kenai River Brown Bears continue to be one of the feel good stories in the NAHL this season. They are in sole possession of 1st place in the West Division and a big reason why is veteran forward Brett Lubanski. Lubanski, 20, had a week to remember as he helped the Brown Bears to a weekend road sweep of the Dawson Creek Rage, and in the process, helped Kenai River take sole possession of 1st place in the West Division. On Friday, Lubanski had a hat-trick and an assist for a four-point game as Kenai River defeated Dawson Creek, 5-3. The next night, Lubanski assisted on the first goal and put the game out of reach with Kenai River’s last two goals of the game in a 6-3 win. For the weekend, Lubanski had five goals and two assists for seven points in the two game weekend sweep. The Farmington Hills, Michigan native ranks tied for 3rd in the NAHL with 17 assists and 5th in the NAHL with 23 points. “I think Brett is a very confident player, who understands how to compete in the NAHL,” said Brown Bears head coach Oliver David. “He was physical this and played the body this weekend, getting first to pucks, getting takeaways and creating opportunities. He has created an environment in the lockerroom where this team does not like to lose.”
Meyers, 19, helped backstop the Blizzard to their first weekend sweep of the year, beating the Austin Bruins on the road both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Minnetonka, Minnesota native stopped 23 of 24 shots in a 5-1 win. His shutout bid was spoiled with just over five minutes to go in the game. On Saturday, Meyers was even better in a 2-1 win, in which he made 31 saves on 32 Bruins shots. For the weekend, Meyers went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a 96.4% save percentage, stopping 54 of 56 total shots. Meyers currently ranks 3rd in the NAHL in both goals against average (1.49) and save percentage (94.3%). “He has played extremely well since his return to the team,” said Blizzard head coach Doc Delcastillo. “He has been very consistent and stayed in control of his game. In a hostile situation this past weekend he remained calm, confident and was square to the shooter. Our team defense, led by our goalies, has been very good lately, which really gives a chance to win on a game-by-game basis.”
One of the other feel good stories of the 2011-12 NAHL season is the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. Winners of just six games a year ago, the Fighting Falcons find themselves alone in 1st place atop of the NAHL’s North Division with a 12-6-2 record. One of the biggest reasons why has been the goaltending of Peter Megariotis, and this past week was no exception. Megariotis, 20, posted a perfect 3-0-0 record this past week leading Port Huron to three wins (two against Kalamazoo and one against Michigan). On Wednesday, the Anaheim Hills, California native allowed just a lone power play goal in a 2-1 win at Michigan, making 21 saves. On Friday, Megariotis made 31 saves as Port Huron toppled then 1st place Kalamazoo at home, 5-3. On Saturday, Megariotis and the Fighting Falcons completed the perfect week with a 5-2 win on the road at Kalamazoo, in which Megariotis made 29 saves in the win. For the week, Megariotis posted a perfect 3-0-0 record, with a 2.00 goals against average and a 93.1% save percentage. He is tied for 4th in the NAHL with nine wins this season and ranks in the top 10 in both goals against average and save percentage. “Peter has seen a lot of pucks in his time in the NAHL and understands how to keep his team in games,” said Fighting Falcons head coach Bill Warren. “He is playing with a lot of confidence, staying aggressive and using his size to his advantage. He has stayed healthy, which has been key.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Brooks Behling, forward, Amarillo Bulls – Brandon Brossoit, forward, Alaska Avalanche – Andrew Graves, forward, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Gregg Gruehl, goaltender, Amarillo Bulls – Connor Hellebuyck, goaltender, Odessa Jackalopes – Brock Kautz, goaltender, Janesville Jets – Dennis Kravchenko, forward, Wichita Falls Wildcats – Nick Kulmanovsky, goaltender, Alaska Avalanche – Matt Leon, goaltender, Wichita Falls Wildcats – Greg Lewis, goaltender, Wenatchee Wild – Jordan Lovick, forward, Texas Tornado – Max McHugh, forward, Wenatchee Wild – Ian Miller, forward, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Aaron Nelson, goaltender, Bismarck Bobcats – Robbie Payne, forward, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Jack Prince, forward, Texas Tornado – Tyler Richter, forward, Bismarck Bobcats – Pijus Rulevicius, forward, Janesville Jets – Trace Strahle, defenseman, Topeka RoadRunners – Reid Sturos, forward, Alexandria Blizzard – Cory Ward, forward, Aberdeen Wings – Ryan White, forward, Topeka RoadRunners.

Perhaps no player in the NAHL had experienced a more peculiar start to the season than Greg Lewis. Lewis, 20, amazingly had yet to win a game heading into this past weekend despite being ranked 2nd in NAHL goaltending. That unenviable statistic was swiftly brought to an end with an exclamation point this past week, as Lewis not only won both his starts on the road at Alaska and Fairbanks, but also posted back-to-back shutouts in the process. “I thought it was amazing he hadn’t won yet and could only compare it to a starting pitcher who was firing on all cylinders, but hadn’t won because of run support,” said Wild head coach John Becanic. On Wednesday, Lewis stopped all 29 shots as the Wild cruised to a 7-0 road win at Alaska. The stiffer test came on Saturday night for the Mars, Pennsylvania native as the Wild looked for a weekend sweep at Fairbanks. Lewis would not disappoint, stopping all 22 Ice Dogs shots for his second shutout of the week in as many starts. “I think our guys were feeling a little guilty that he had played so well and no wins to show for it,” continued Becanic. “Greg has played as good as we could have asked this season and it was nice to see him finally get those wins. He has always been a confident goalie, but this was important for all of us that we had a week like we did.”
Wenatchee’s four wins (all on the road) this past week, also came with an offensive upside. Wenatchee scored 21 goals in their four wins during the week and were paced offensively by Ben Carey. Carey, 18, who is an Air Force Academy recruit, had six goals during the week along with two assists for eight points in Wenatchee’s sweep of both Alaska and Fairbanks. The majority of Carey’s offensive output came in the weekday wins over Alaska, in which he was named the game’s #1 star both nights. On Tuesday, Carey had two goals and an assist in an 8-4 win. On Wednesday, the Centennial, Colorado native had a hat-trick (including the game-winning goal) and an assist in a 7-0 win. In Fairbanks, Carey was held pointless on Friday night, but on Saturday struck for Wenatchee’s first goal (also the game-winner) in a 3-0 win. “What’s important about Ben’s play right now is that his goals are coming at key times in the games. Not just the game-winners, but goals scored early on in the games to give us momentum,” said Wild head coach John Becanic. “He is getting better at not only shooting more, but more importantly, hitting the net. He is earning his goals.”
Kalamazoo went 2-1-0 in three road games this week in Jamestown and in the process, vaulted the Jr. K-Wings into 1st place in the NAHL’s North Division. Leading the way for Kalamazoo is forward Robbie Payne, 18. After recording an assist in a 5-2 loss on Friday, Payne recorded an assist on the game-winning goal on Saturday’s 2-1 win. However on Sunday, Payne had a game for the ages. The forward from Gaylord, Michigan exploded for three goals (including the game-winner) and four assists for an NAHL-season high seven points in Kalamazoo’s wild 8-7 win over Jamestown. “I think Robbie is just a naturally gifted scorer,” said Kalamazoo head coach Marc Fakler, who has his expansion Jr. K-Wings in 1st place. “He struck lightning in a bottle on Sunday, but he has put in a lot of hard work to make games like that happen.” Payne’s career night included a goal in each period, including the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in the 3rd period. Payne currently is tied for the NAHL lead in goals with 13.
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Jordan Bancroft, forward, Janesville Jets – Brooks Behling, forward, Amarillo Bulls – Jeff Bergh, defenseman, Alaska Avalanche – Paul Byrne, defenseman, Springfield Jr. Blues – Gage Christianson, forward, Alaska Avalanche – Frank DeAugsutine, forward, Bismarck Bobcats – Dan Dupell, forward, Topeka RoadRunners – Christian Folin, defenseman, Austin Bruins – Taylor Herndon, forward, Texas Tornado – Ben Jaremko, forward, Coulee Region Chill – Jordan Lovick, forward, Texas Tornado – Brett Lubanski, forward, Kenai River Brown Bears – Ken MacLean, goaltender, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Peter Megariotis, goaltender, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Jacob Meyers, goaltender, Alexandria Blizzard – Sean Muller, forward, Kenai River Brown Bears – Tyler Parks, goaltender, Springfield Jr. Blues – John Rey, defenseman, Amarillo Bulls – Tyler Richter, forward, Bismarck Bobcats – Kyle Schempp, forward, Traverse City North Stars – John Simonson, forward, Austin Bruins.

Stolarz, 17, who was placed on The Hockey News hot list last month, showed this past week why he is such a highly-touted goaltender as he and the Corpus Christi IceRays fashioned two home wins over the 2nd place Texas Tornado. The two wins extended the IceRays win streak to a season-high five games as they are now just two points out of 3rd place in the South Division. On Wednesday, Stolarz allowed just one goal and made 26 saves in a 3-1 win over the Tornado. On Thursday, Stolarz got the start again and this time was even more spectacular in the game. Stolarz, who hails from Jackson, New Jersey made 39 saves as the IceRays were outshot 40-19, but thanks to Stolarz, came away with a 2-1 win as Stolarz earned 1st star honors. For the week, Stolars went 2-0-0, stopped 65 of 67 shots for a 97.0% save percentage and posted a goals against average of 1.00. “For a 17-year-old goaltender, I think Anthony plays with a certain type of confidence and swagger that his teammates have rallied around,” said IceRays first-year head coach Justin Quenneville. “I think more importantly is that each and every start, he gives is a chance to win and the team has played better recently knowing that fact.”
Novakovich, 20, was instrumental in Alaska’s three-game home sweep of the defending Robertson Cup champion Fairbanks this past weekend. The forward from Saratoga, California had three goals, including two game-winning goals on back-to-back nights and two assists as Alaska took a three game set from Fairbanks to increase their winning streak to seven straight games. On Thursday, Novakovich scored the third Alaska goal and assisted on another in a convincing 6-1 win. The next night, he scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes remaining in the game to give Alaska a close 4-3 win. On Saturday, Novakovich again would make the difference, as Alaska came back from a 3-1 deficit to win, 5-4. Novakovich set up the goal that tied the game 3-3, and then eventually would score his second consecutive game-winning goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the game. “Kevin has really stepped his game up during our winning streak,” said Avs head coach Corey Millen. “He is making his teammates better and our recent success has been a full team effort thanks to the kind of leadership that Kevin is displaying on a game-by-game basis.”
Since being acquired in a trade with Aberdeen in late September, Hennum, 20, has flourished with the Jackalopes and it was none more apparent this past weekend as the forward from Elk River, Minnesota struck for four goals (an NAHL weekend high) and an assist as the Jackalopes split a pair of home games over the weekend. Hennum’s breakout game came on Thursday night at home as he recorded a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal and an assist in a 6-1 win over New Mexico. On Saturday, Hennum had Odessa’s only goal in a close 2-1 loss against 1st place Amarillo. In eight games with Odessa, Hennum has nine points. “I thought Chad played very well this past weekend,” said Jackalopes head coach Paul Gillis. “He can put the puck in the net and score goals which is something that is at a premium in this league. I think we are becoming more organized as a team and getting better by the weekend thanks to performances like the one Chad had.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical): Karl Beckman, defenseman, Amarillo Bulls – Adam Chapie, forward, New Mexico Mustangs – Anthony Coles, forward, Jamestown Ironmen – Dan Dupell, forward, Topeka RoadRunners – Bodhi Engum, goaltender, Alaska Avalanche – Chris Fischer, forward, Austin Bruins – Alex Frere, forward, Kenai River Brown Bears – David Gandara, forward, Chicago Hitmen – Gregg Gruehl, goaltender, Amarillo Bulls – Connor Hellebuyck, goaltender, Odessa Jackalopes – Nick Kohn, goaltender, Chicago Hitmen – Tony Kujava, goaltender, Janesville Jets – Connor McBride, forward, Janesville Jets – Peter Megariotis, goaltender, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Steve Obarzanek, forward, Aberdeen Wings – Alex Okicki, goaltender, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Robbie Payne, forward, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Eric Purcell, forward, Corpus Christi IceRays – Seth Ronsberg, forward, Alexandria Blizzard – Mitch Sand, defenseman, Port Huron Fighting Falcons – Cory Ward, forward, Aberdeen Wings – AJ White, forward, Michigan Warriors – Ryan White, forward, Topeka RoadRunners.

Osborn, 20, continued to add to one of the strongest starts to a season by a player in recent NAHL history with another memorable week, garnering 1st star honors. On Wednesday, Osborn lit the lamp for two goals, including the game-winning goal, and assisted on the other two as Fairbanks edged out the Fresno Monsters, 4-3. The next night, the Alpine, California, native scored early in the 3rd period for the eventual game-winning goal in a 3-1 Ice Dogs win over the Monsters. For the weekend, Osborn had three goals, including both game-winners, two assists and was +2. His 24 points are tops in the NAHL. “I think JT has been an incredible leader for us and that has translated to his play on the ice,” said Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart. “He is really firing on all cylinders right now and more importantly, his goals and assists are coming at key times in the game.”
Ballmer, 19, was solid between the pipes as the Jamestown Ironmen swept the Chicago Hitmen over the weekend. In total, Ballmer allowed just one goal in two games, stopping 51 of 52 combined shots. Ballmer has played more minutes and faced more shots that any NAHL goalie so far this season, and his save percentage is right around 92% for the season. “Our team goes as far as Joe is going to take us, he is that important,” said Jamestown head coach Dan Daikawa. “He has been the guy to keep us consistent and really played a big role in both our wins this past weekend.”
