NAHL Weekend Preview

The NAHL is back in action this weekend with a full slate of 27 games from Friday-Sunday.
This weekend is a very important one for movement in the standings, as the NAHL standings get frozen on Monday, January 10th to determine the selection of players and coaches for the 2022 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.
Simply put, the higher a team is in the standings via win percentage, the more spots they will have at the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.
The NAHL has had a great run of NCAA commitments in recent weeks, bringing the current season total to 150 NCAA Division I commitments.
With the schedule over halfway done and the USA Hockey trade deadline looming in just one month, the time is now for teams to make a move in the standings.
In the Central Division this weekend, the battle for 1st place resumes as Minot is in Austin with the two teams separated by just two points for the top spot in the division. 3rd and 4th place will also do battle as the Aberdeen Wings are in North Iowa. Finally, St. Cloud will host the Bismarck Bobcats with both teams on the outside looking in the playoff picture.
In the East, there is a big three-game series in Northeast as the Generals host Danbury for three games. All eyes will be on Maryland as the 2nd place Black Bears host the 1st place New Jersey Titans, who enter the weekend on a five-game win streak. The final series has the Maine Nordiques in Johnstown to take on the 3rd place Tomahawks.
In the Midwest, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs look to widen their lead atop the division with two games at 2nd place Springfield. Fresh off a 4-3 shootout win on Thursday, the Janesville Jets host the Kenai River Brown Bears for two more games this weekend with the Jets just seven points back of the 4th and final playoff spot. Anchorage will look for a series sweep against the Magicians with one more game on Saturday and Chippewa will travel to the Wilderness for a lone game on Saturday.
In the South, it’s a full slate of four games as all eight teams are in action. The 1st place New Mexico ice Wolves are in Corpus Christi. 2nd and 3rd place battle as Odessa is in Amarillo for a pair of games. Wichita Falls is in Shreveport with the two teams separated by just two points and on the outside looking in the playoff picture. The final series has El Paso in Lone Star.
