NAHL Weekend Preview
The NAHL is back in action this weekend with 28 games on the schedule from Friday-Sunday in the last full weekend of March.
Less than a month remains until the 2023 NAHL Robertson Cup Playoffs and 13 of the 16 playoff spots are still up for grabs.
It was another good week for NCAA commitments as three more players made their plans known. So far, a total of 223 players who are playing in the NAHL or are NAHL alumni are committed to play NCAA hockey. That number includes nine players who recently played in the 2023 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.
In the Central this weekend, it continues to be a dogfight for the final three playoff spots as the Austin Bruins are just a couple points away from a division title. The Bruins have just one games this weekend as they host St. Cloud on Saturday as the Norsemen are in a tie for 2nd place. Also in a tie for 2nd place are the North Iowa Bulls, who have won five in a row and will host the Minot Minotauros, who are three points out of the final playoff spot. Holding onto the final playoff spot are the Aberdeen Wings, who are on the road this weekend to take on the Bismarck Bobcats, who are five points out of the final playoff spot.
In the East, it’s a potential playoff preview as the division-leading Maryland Black Bears put their four-game winning streak on the line against the 4th place Northeast Generals. It’s also a potential playoff priview in Maine this weekend as the 3rd place Nordiques host the 2nd place New Jersey Titans. The final series has the Philadelphia Rebels in Johnstown to take on the Tomahawks as both teams are in must-win mode.
In the Midwest, it continues to be a scramble from top to bottom for a playoff spot. The division-leading Wisconsin Windigo picked up a 6-5 shootout win on Thursday night in Chippewa Falls as the two teams will play again on Friday. It is a big battle for the 4th and final playoff spot this weekend in Kenai River as the Brown Bears host the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Janesville Jets are in must-win territory as they travel North to face the Minnesota Wilderness, who hold onto 2nd place in the division. The final series has Anchorage hosting Springfield for three games.
In the South, the big race is for 2nd place as the red-hot Shreveport Mudbugs are trying to catch Lone Star for home ice. Shreveport is in Odessa, while Lone Star is in New Mexico. The Oklahoma Warriors are just a few wins away from locking up the division title as they visit El Paso, and Corpus Christi is in Amarillo.
