New Mexico forward Johnson makes NCAA DI commitment
The New Mexico of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Ryan Johnson has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
“I am proud to announce my commitment to further my education and play Division 1 hockey at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. Thank you to my family, teammates, coaches, and everyone else who has helped me along the way,” said Johnson.
Johnson, 20, is playing his third season of junior hockey and second in Albuquerque with the Ice Wolves. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, the 5’10 181 lbs came to the Ice Wolves in the 2022-23 season and was a key contributor on the ice, playing a total of 55 games and recording 33 points.
This season, Johnson’s offensive production has picked up, sitting atop the New Mexico roster in scoring with 40 points (21 goals, 19 assists) in 32 games played, placing him 6th across the entire league among qualified skaters in points per game. His offensive production has been scorching hot as of late, tallying points in 6 of the past 7 games for New Mexico including single-handedly lifting New Mexico past the Colorado Grit 2-1 last weekend with both goals.
“We are extremely happy for Ryan and Alaska-Anchorage. Ryan took a big step this year and it has not only impacted him positively, it's done the same for our hockey team. He's been a big-time player for us thus far, and we're looking forward to him continuing that down the stretch. He's earned this and next year he will get the opportunity to play with his brother (Matthew Johnson).” said Phil Fox, head coach of the New Mexico Ice Wolves.
Johnson will be playing alongside his brother, former Ice Wolve Alex Gomez, and four other current NAHLers in the near future.
