Sunday Wrap Up: IceRays, Brown Bears Secure Three Game Sweeps

October 7, 2024
by Trevor Jolley

Kenai River moves into first place in the Midwest Division with the win on Sunday

New Mexico 1 @ Corpus Christi 6 - The Corpus Christi IceRays took out their brooms Sunday as they captured a 6-1 to complete the sweep over the New Mexico Ice Wolves. It was a one sided affair for the Ice Rays, as Stanley Hubbard scored the lone goal for the Ice Woles midway through the second frame. Hubbard’s goal was unassisted, making him the only New Mexico player to get on the scoresheet. On the other side, five different IceRays put their names under the goal column of the scoresheet, with 11 different players total recording a point. Lars Petter-Eckholm was the standout of the day, notching two goals and an assist. His praiseworthy performance was backed by Corpus Christi goaltender Vlad Bryzgalov, who recorded 35 saves on 36 shots in the win.

Austin 6 @ Minnesota M 4 - The Austin Bruins used a high powered offense to propel themselves past the Minnesota Mallards 6-4 on Sunday. The scoring was often, and early, as Gavin Hruza opened the scoring for the Bruins less than three minutes after the opening puck drop. In similar fashion, his strike would quickly be answered by Hunter Hayes for the Mallards just a couple minutes later. Kamden Kaiser took the lead back for the Bruins to end the first period 2-1. The second period saw pairs of goals from each team, but the Bruins would outscore the Mallards in the third to collect the win, Goaltender Gavin Rustile made 31 out of 35 saves on the night, while Richard Rafaj made a staggering 42 saves on 48 shots in the Mallards’ loss.

Janesville 2 @ Kenai River 3 - The Kenai River Brown Bears edged the Jacksonville Jets by a final score of 3-2  Sunday. Brady Engelkes and James Lyver(s jumped out to a 2-0 lead for Brown Bears before Trevor Aberrwald got one back in the second period or the Janesville Jets. The Jets came with fuel, but ran out quickly. Luke Lizak tried his best,  but the Jets could not overcome the one goal deficit as they succumbed to their errors  in their loss to the Brown Bears
