Watertown Defenseman Smulkstys makes NCAA DI Commitment
The Watertown Shamrocks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that defenseman Andrew Smulkstys has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
Smulkstys went into detail on his decision-making process on committing to the Nanooks program.
“My decision to commit to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks was easy. I have heard nothing but good things about the program, and the amount of interest the coaching staff had in me meant a lot. I am very excited for the future.”
The 6-foot-5 lefty from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is in his first full season in the League of Opportunity. Last year, the defenseman played a handful of games with both the Watertown Shamrocks and the Bismarck Bobcats as an affiliate player. The ‘07 skater this season has laced up in 31 games for the South Dakota team and has tallied two goals and nine assists. His first junior goal in his career was scored at the NAHL Showcase against the New Jersey Titans in the third period of the contest.
Head coach of the Shamrocks, Casey Kirley, dives into detail on why the blueliner is deserving of this opportunity.
“We are extremely proud of Andrew for his commitment to Alaska-Fairbanks. Andrew has earned his commitment through the work that he has put in on the ice, in the gym, and in watching film. Alaska is getting a high-character person and a great player.”
Smulkstys is one of four members of the Watertown Shamrocks to make a Division I hockey college commitment.
