New Mexico Defenseman Harrold makes NCAA DI Commitment

The New Mexico Ice Wolves of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that defenseman Koen Harrold has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Playing in his first season in the NAHL, the young ‘08 defenseman has showcased his skill set against an older league. Harrold is a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This season, the 6-foot lefty has laced up in 42 games for the Ice Wolves, tallying two goals while making 14 assists. His first junior goal was at the NAHL Showcase in overtime game-winning fashion. With 27 seconds on the clock, Harrold found the back of the net to give New Mexico the victory. His ability from the blue line was recognized, and the future Nanook was selected as a Top Prospect for the Selects Blue roster this year. Harrold was a member of the team that defeated the USNTDP on day two of the event.

The 17-year-old first-year blueliner shares what it means to secure a Division I commitment.

“I am extremely excited and honored to announce my commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. I am incredibly grateful to my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. I also want to thank the New Mexico Ice Wolves organization for all they have done for me this season.”

Head coach of the Ice Wolves, Kyle McKenzie, explains what he has seen from Harrold this season.

“Koen has grown tremendously on and off the ice this season and earned his commitment. We are very proud of Koen and the strides he’s made this year.”

Harrold is one of two members of the New Mexico Ice Wolves to make a Division I hockey college commitment.
