Danbury Alternate Captain Freel makes NCAA Commitment

The Danbury Hat Tricks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that forward Peter Freel has committed to play NCAA hockey for SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC.

The 6-foot-1 skater from Dunfermline, Scotland, Freel will play with the Red Dragons in the fall. Freel is a first-year forward with the Hat Tricks, following being drafted in the 2025 NAHL Entry Draft in the fourth round, 128th overall, by Danbury. The 20-year-old laced up in 54 games during the regular season. The ‘05 lefty lit the lamp 12 times for Danbury while notching 17 assists. Two of his tallies were named game-winning goals in contests, and he featured a +15 rating on the year.

Freel states his excitement to join the Red Dragons.

“I’m super excited to continue my athletic and academic career at Cortland. I’d like to thank my family for always supporting me both on and off the ice, my teammates from over the years who made showing up to the rink memorable, and the coaches who have helped evolve my game.”

His work on the ice earned him the recognition of being named a Top Prospect for the East Division Team. In addition to the individual accomplishments, he also helped to lift the Hat Tricks to their first postseason appearance as an organization.

Head coach and general manager of the Hat Tricks, Lenny Caglianone, states why Freel is deserving of the opportunity.

Freel is one of 11 members of the Danbury Hat Tricks to make a college ice hockey commitment.
