Tuesday Thrillers on Day 1 of the NAHL Showcase

Day one of the NAHL Showcase is wrapped up and the 14 contests brought all of the action! Read more about the exciting games below.

Billings 4 @ Minnesota M 2 – The Billings Cattle Punchers met the Minnesota Mallards in their first game of the Showcase in a back-and-forth battle on Wednesday. The Cattle Punchers sounded the horn first with 12:08 left in the first period with a goal from Devon Winder. The Mallards evened the tally with a goal of their own from Mavrik Duhaime with roughly three minutes left in the first. The second period was a tough fought battle between the teams, with only the Cattle Punchers finding the back of the net with a goal scored by Joey Fankhanel. The third and final period saw more action when Billings’ Micah Seery scored the team’s third goal of the night. The Mallards answered back later in the period with a goal from Ty Gordon, reducing the deficit to just one goal. With 1:23 left in the game, Minnesota M pulled their goalie, resulting in a goal just 23 seconds later from Billings’ Fankhanel, his second of the night. The Cattle Punchers ran away with the 4-2 win, securing their third win of the season.

Johnstown 1 @ Minnesota W 3 – The Minnesota Wilderness secured their third win of the season Wednesday at home against the Johnstown Tomahawks. The Wilderness started off hot with a one-timer from Kevin Lysohir, assisted by Frantisek Netusil off the faceoff. Minnesota’s Owen Smith went bar down just minutes later for the team’s second goal of the night. Soon into the second period, Minnesota’s Lysohir scored his second goal of the game on a power play. The game was back-and-forth with shots and penalties until the Tomahawks got on the board for the first time after a breakaway scored by Evan Kensey, assisted by Jacob Duval. The Wilderness were able to hang on for the win, keeping their perfect record on the season.

Elmira 3 @ Minot 5 – The Elmira Aviators played the Minot Minotauros in a nail-biter on Wednesday in each team’s first game of the Showcase. The Aviators came out strong less than three minutes into the game with a goal from Adam Sebastian Kurka. Minot answered back three minutes later with their own goal from Artyom Zhukov. The back-and-forth continued to the second period, with Elmira’s Cruz Ferguson giving the Aviators the lead once again. The Minotauros tied it back up when Philip Wiklund found twine later in the period. In the third period, Minot grabbed the lead for the first time of the game with a goal from Zach Palik. The Aviators did not let them keep the lead for long after Timofei Korober evened the score back up with minutes to go in the game. With almost two minutes left, Dane Ramirez of the Minotauros took back the lead, but Minot did not stop there. 41 seconds were left on the clock when Briggs Knott scored the fifth goal for the Minots, nailing down their win.

St. Cloud 1 @ New Hampshire 4 – The New Hampshire Mountain Kings secured a win against the St. Cloud Norsemen Wednesday on the first day of Showcase games. New Hampshire’s Benjamin Short started off the scoring just two minutes into the game. The Mountain Kings tallied another goal just before the horn when Aidan Patton found the back of the net, giving New Hampshire a two-goal lead going into the second period. Late into the second period, Short scored again for the Mountain Kings with a power play goal. The Norsemen finally answered back in the third period with a goal from Christian Garrity, but it got a response less than one minute later when New Hampshire’s Deke Davidson scored on a power play, securing the 4-1 win for the Mountain Kings.

Janesville 2 @ New Jersey 5 – The New Jersey Titans ran away with a win against the Janesville Jets Wednesday during the opening day of the Showcase. Janesville’s Harry Minucci started off the scoring for the game, giving the Jets a one-goal lead early on. The lead did not last long before Nikolas Doumas of the Titans evened the score. The game was tied going into the second period, but it was almost halfway through when Grant Dillard of the Jets took back the lead for Janesville. Roughly a minute later, New Jersey’s Doumas scored his second of the game to tie it back up once again. New Jersey took off with the lead with back-to-back goals from Hayden Saad and Jackson Nakfoor, ending the second period with a 4-2 lead. The third period was a hard-fought battle between the teams until two minutes left when Janesville pulled their goalie to get a man up. With 41 seconds left, the Titans’ Joe Pocrnic scored the fifth and final goal for New Jersey, securing the 5-2 win.

Pueblo 3 @ Kenai River 4 (OT) - The Pueblo Peppers faced Kenai River to open up their 2026 season. The first period saw numerous penalties from each team. The Brown Bears were the first to light up the scoreboard, as Benjamin Tauscher buried a power-play goal midway through the first frame. Penalties in the first period led to offensive opportunities from both units. Kenai River goaltender Devin Rustlie made a great save on a Pueblo penalty shot, keeping the Brown Bears' lead. This lead was soon diminished as Jonathon Pylypuik scored the first goal of the season for the Peppers in the final minutes of the first frame. The momentum of Pylypuik’s goal would carry over to the second period as Pueblo began to find a rhythm. Jake McIntosh broke away and found the net with a short-handed goal, giving Pueblo the lead. This lead would not last long as Brady Morrell scored a 5-on-3 power-play equalizer. Kenai River followed this with another goal scored by Derek Schliebner during 4-on-4 play, the first non-special teams goal of the game. The Peppers evened the score yet again with an even-strength goal scored by Nolan Warner late in the second period. The beginning of the third period saw the Brown Bears playing dominant defense, only allowing three shots in the opening half of the frame. The Peppers held their own on defense, highlighted by Max Kogler’s seven saves in the third frame. The scoreless third period sent the game to overtime with Kenai River getting a man advantage. The Brown Bears were quick to capitalize on the opportunity, with Karim Kazhibekov scoring a game-winning power-play goal. The Brown Bears earned a much-needed win before their matchup with Northeast Generals, and the Pueblo Peppers will look to turn things around before their game against the Oklahoma Warriors on Friday.

Grand Junction 3 @ Danbury 1 - The River Hawks faced the Danbury Hat Tricks in hope to find their first win of the season. Grand Junction used this motivation to find an early first goal minutes into the game. Adam Konowalchuk ripped a shot and found the top left corner of the net to open up scoring for the night. Grand Junction would hold on to the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first frame, despite being outshot by Danbury.  The second period saw a barrage of penalties by the Hat Tricks. Danbury’s special teams unit stepped up with three-straight penalty kills. Grand Junction would finally find a way around the Danbury backline as Holden Gallagher scored an even-strength goal late in the second frame to give the River Hawks a two-goal lead. Danbury would get on the board with an even-strength goal by Tristan Konobelj less than a minute later to close out the second period. The third period kicked off with both teams seeing penalty minutes. Both defensive units brought their best as the period showed very few offensive opportunities. Each team had seven shots in the third, leaving the third period scoreless until Holden Gallagher scored his second goal of the night with only 22 seconds to go. Grand Junction pulled away in a 3-1 victory and their first win of the season. They will look to carry this momentum into their matchup with the Johnstown Tomahawks. The Hat Tricks will prepare for their matchup with the Wisconsin Windigo with hopes to turn things around.

Fairbanks 2 @ Bismarck 1 - The Fairbanks Ice Dogs took on the Bismarck Bobcats, each team trying to give the other their first loss of the year. The first period started with multiple defensive stands by both teams. Bismarck’s Cade Bell opened up scoring with an even-strength strike to give the Bobcats a one-goal lead. The goal was followed by multiple penalty kills by Fairbank. The Ice Dogs evened up the score as Mason Serafin found the back of the net for an even-strength goal of his own in the final minutes of the first frame. The second period highlighted the defensive lines for both teams, generating numerous stops. The teams took turns on the power play and earned a pair of penalty kills. The scoreless second frame ended with each team putting up seven shots in a defensive second period. The third period opened up with Fairbanks breaking through the Bismarck defense. Dean Andrews broke the deadlock with a go-ahead even-strength goal to kick off the third frame. Fairbanks goaltender Izaak Kalis was the highlight of the third frame, saving ten shots to keep the Ice Dogs ahead. The Ice Dogs extended their undefeated start to the season, defeating Bismarck 2-1 and handing the Bobcats their first loss. Fairbanks will look to keep the streak alive against the Philadelphia Rebels, while the Bobcats prepare to face the New Mexico Ice Wolves.

Wisconsin 1 @ Watertown 7 - The Watertown Shamrocks looked to secure a win in their matchup against the Wisconsin Windigo. The Shamrocks started hot in search of their first win of the season. Watertown did not waste time getting on the board as Justin Obrochta found the back of the net with an even-strength goal just minutes into the first period. Wisconsin had two chances on the power play in the first frame, but both were shut down by Watertown penalty killers. The frame concluded with the Shamrocks applying full pressure on the Wisconsin defense, outshooting the Windigo 15-7. The Shamrocks carried over their momentum as Justin Bartley scored a power-play goal to kick off the second period, giving Watertown a two-goal lead. The Windigo answered quickly with a peculiar even-strength goal by Hunter Friedrich that ricocheted off the glass, hitting the Shamrock goaltender and falling into the goal. Watertown did not let this interrupt their offense as Jake Pietila scored an intriguing goal in the same way, hitting the glass then bouncing off the goaltender into the back of the net. The Shamrock’s offense kept rolling as Jordan Brothers scored an even-strength strike less than a minute later, bringing the Watertown lead to three, as the teams headed to the locker room. The third period started with Wisconsin getting a few opportunities on the power play, but the Watertown penalty kill refused to give the Windigo any chances. The Shamrock’s Kyle Greene scored a short-handed goal during a scramble in the crease. Watertown did not let up as Boone Chartier added his name to the scoresheet with minutes left in the game. The game concluded with Jake Pietila scoring his second even-strength goal of the night. Watertown goaltender Mason Gudridge had an amazing night, saving 32 shots out of 33 shots faced. The Shamrocks outscored the Windigo 54-33 in their 7-1 victory. This was Watertown's first win of the season, and they will hope to have a similar performance when they take on the Philadelphia Rebels on Friday. The Windigo will look to make some changes before their home matchup with the Danbury Hat Tricks.

Aberdeen 5 @ Springfield 3 - The Aberdeen Wings took on the Springfield Jr. Blues, as Springfield looked to get their first win of the 2026 season. The first period opened with both defenses silencing offensive opportunities. The Jr. Blues would find the net first as James Marshall scored a power-play goal to give them the lead. Springfield goaltender Merik Grinaker showed out in the first period, saving ten shots. Cartyr Simonson added his name to the scoresheet as he drilled an even-strength goal with just seconds left in the first period, giving the Jr. Blues a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission while being outshot by Aberdeen 10-7. The Wings found their footing to start the second period, despite being a man down. Jonathan Doucette broke away and slotted a short-handed goal to cut Springfield’s lead in half. The Wings then saw a pair of opportunities on the power play, but Springfield’s penalty kill unit proved to be impressive, shutting down both chances. Aberdeen would eventually connect on offense with a quick wrist shot by Bradyn Strom for an even-strength equalizer. Strom’s goal was immediately followed by David Hruby scoring an even-strength goal of his own, giving the Wings their first lead of the night. Springfield found themself in more penalty trouble, but the penalty kill unit shut down two more power plays to conclude the second period. Aberdeen continued to apply pressure to start the third period. Payne Riffey scored an even-strength goal minutes into the frame to bring the Wing’s lead to two. The Wings continued to work smoothly on offense in hopes of closing out this game. Brody Dustin found the net with an even-strength goal to ride the Wing’s momentum. The Jr. Blues would not go down without a fight, as James Marshall fired one in for his second goal of the night. Aberdeen anchored down and finished the night with one final defensive stand, securing their 5-3 victory over Springfield. The Wings will look for a similar result against the New Jersey Titans on Friday, while the Jr. Blues will face the Ogden Mustangs.

Philadelphia 5 @ Ogden 0 - The Philadelphia Rebels scored three times in the opening period and never looked back, shutting out the Ogden Mustangs 5-0. Paxton Couture opened the scoring with an assist from Jake Schultz before Emmet McClaine doubled the lead with assists from Dylan Moran and Gavin Callahan. Oscar Djurberg added another goal later in the frame off an assist from Timmy Donohue to give Philadelphia a 3-0 advantage heading into the first intermission. Neither team found the back of the net in the second period despite Ogden outshooting Philadelphia 17-2 in the frame. The Rebels added two more goals in the third period as Nick Beam scored with an assist from Djurberg before Moran closed out the scoring to make it 5-0. Philadelphia goaltender Benjamin Varsa stopped all 39 shots he faced to record the shutout. Ogden finished with a 39-14 advantage in shots despite the loss.

Idaho Falls 2 @ Anchorage 3 (SO) - The Anchorage Wolverines earned a 3-2 shootout victory over the Idaho Falls Spud Kings. Anchorage opened the scoring in the first period as Jack McKenna found the back of the net on the power play with assists from Landon Greenough and Chase Trompeter. Idaho Falls responded later in the frame when Brett Kazmierski scored off an assist from Dayton Tailfeathers to even the game at one. After a scoreless second period, Benson Peterson restored Anchorage’s lead in the third with assists from McDonald and Scott. The Spud Kings answered with 1:11 remaining as Csanade Erdosi scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Kazmierski to force overtime. Neither team found the back of the net in the extra frame, sending the game to a shootout. Cooper Zinda scored for Idaho Falls, while Chase Trompeter and Sheldon Rioux converted for Anchorage to secure the 3-2 win. Wolverines goaltender Maverick Avent made 30 saves, while Dylan McFadyen stopped 34 shots for Idaho Falls. Anchorage finished with a 36-32 advantage in shots

Austin 2 @ Maryland 3 - The Maryland Black Bears remained unbeaten after Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over the Austin Bruins. Maryland opened the scoring in the first period when Tanner Terranova found the back of the net to give the Black Bears an early lead. Austin responded in the second period as Kyle Sorensen scored to even the game at one. Maryland quickly regained the advantage when Vincent Glos scored off an assist from Brayden Wade to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. Wade added a goal of his own in the third to extend Maryland’s advantage to two. Austin answered later in the frame when Ally Mostafaie scored to cut the deficit to one, but the Black Bears held on for the 3-2 victory. Michael Iliff stopped 22 of 24 shots for Maryland, while Dilans Birkans made 21 saves for Austin. The teams finished even in the shots category with 24 apiece.

Northeast 4 @ Lone Star 5 (SO) - The Lone Star Brahmas earned a 5-4 shootout victory over the Northeast Generals in a back-and-forth matchup. Lone Star opened the scoring in the first period when Leo Lundblad found the back of the net with assists from Zetterlund and Oliver. Northeast responded later in the frame as Kyle Moyer scored off assists from Porter and O’Rear to tie the game at one. The Generals took their first lead in the second period behind a goal from Peter Koukouves, but Oliver answered for the Brahmas to even the game at two. Jack Messick put Northeast back in front before Dylan Chernoff responded for Lone Star to send the teams into the third period tied 3-3. Zetterlund gave the Brahmas a 4-3 lead early in the third, but Joc Bukovec answered just 15 seconds later off assists from Porter and Savaglio to tie the game once again, this time at four. After a scoreless overtime, the matchup headed to a shootout. Kody Moyer and Logan Poulin converted for Northeast, while Channing Kao, Zetterlund and Vincenzo Capano scored for Lone Star to secure the 5-4 victory. Keagin Wilson made 20 saves for the Generals, while Ethan Ramonetti and Leo Gabriel combined for 20 saves for Lone Star. The teams finished even with 24 shots apiece.
