Killer Bees sweep Jackalopes thanks to win on Wednesday

February 5, 2014
Odessa Jackalopes 1 @ Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3 – It was another strong performance in goal from Olli Kalkaja as the Killer Bees defeated Odessa on Wednesday night 3-1 to complete a mid-week home sweep and move into sole possession of 2nd place in the South.

Rio Grande Valley outshot Odessa 43-24 and if it weren’t for the goaltending of Jackalopes netminder Yoshihiro Kuroiwa, the margin could have been wider. Rio Grande Valley outshot Odessa 17-7 in the 1st period and got a goal late in the frame from JB Baker.  Anthony Croston and Evan Schmidbauer assisted on the goal. It would be the first of three assists on the night for Schmidbauer.

In the 2nd period, Rio Grande Valley would score late in the period again as this time Jared Dedenbach would end up scoring the eventual game-winner as Croston and Schmidbauer assisted again.

In the 3rd period, Ben Greiner scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season with helpers from Schmidbauer and Dylan Abood to make it 3-0. Odessa would answer two minutes later as Matt Beranek scored to spoil Kalkaja’s shutout bid.

Kalkaja ended up making 23 saves in the win, while Kuroiwa made 40 saves in the loss. Croston ended up with two assists on the night.
