Shreveport forward Hutton makes NCAA D1 commitment

April 17, 2020

Shreveport forward Matt Hutton, who played in the 2020 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, began his junior hockey career playing in the NA3HL.

The Shreveport Mudbugs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that Top Prospects forward Matt Hutton has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey for Robert Morris University in Atlantic Hockey.

Hutton, 21, just completed his third and final season playing junior hockey, which included the past two years in the NAHL to along with his first season in the NA3HL. The 6’1/190 lbs. native of Carmel, Indiana, began the 2019-20 season with the Odessa Jackalopes, serving as team captain.

Right before the trade deadline, Hutton was dealt to the Mudbugs for the Robertson Cup Playoff run. Overall in 51 games played, Hutton recorded 18 points (11 goals, 7 assists) this past season, which included five points in 12 games with Shreveport.

Hutton was also selected to and played in the 2020 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the South Division team, where he had one point in two games during the event.

“As this past season was winding down we looked to bring Matt in as a great addition for our playoff push.  We felt he was a solid 200-foot player.  He can skate, play hard when needed, and has a team first mentality.  Matt’s ability to win faceoffs and give his team puck possession is a huge asset.  Lastly, Matt possesses a skill set, shot, and vision for the game that helped make his line combination one of the most productive down the stretch.  I know Matt is very excited to be a part of the RMU family and we wish them both the best,” said Mudbugs head coach Jason Campbell.

Overall in his two and half seasons in the NAHL, Hutton recorded 28 points in 103 career games.

Prior to playing in the NAHL, Hutton made his junior hockey debut in the NA3HL with the Mid-Cities Jr. Stars during the 2017-18 season. During that season, he appeared in 27 games and recorded 32 points.
