Maryland defenseman Sofikitis makes NCAA DI commitment
The Maryland Black Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman Evan Sofikitis has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Maine in Hockey East.
Sofikitis, 16, is currently in his first season of junior hockey in the NAHL with the Black Bears. The 5’8/180 lbs. native of Bloomfield Hills, MI, has posted nine points (all assists) in his first 11 games played so far this season.
“I’m super excited to announce my commitment to The University of Maine. I am blessed to have the opportunity to attend such a great spot to play hockey and continue my studies. I have to first off thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. I would also like to thank my family, coaches, friends and advisors because I wouldn’t be here without them,” said Sofikitis. “Thank you to the Maryland Black Bears for the opportunity they have done for me this year. From one Black Bear to the next!”
“Evan has really taken advantage of the opportunity here in Maryland, and has impressed us with his maturity, ability to move pucks, and his competitiveness. He is a heck of a player, and a very popular teammate. Congrats to Evan and his family on this achievement. Also, congrats to the University of Maine, who just got themselves a real good one,” said Maryland head coach Clint Mylymok.
Prior to playing in the NAHL, Sofikitis played youth hockey in Michigan for both Little Caesars and Honeybaked.
He is the 8th player on the 2023-24 Maryland roster who is committed to play NCAA Division I hockey.
