Wings and Ice Dogs win to force Game 3's on Sunday

May 12, 2019

Jonathan Sorenson had two goals in a 4-2 win in Game 2 to help the Fairbanks Ice Dogs force a Game 3 on Sunday at the 2019 Robertson Cup.

Robertson Cup Semi-Final #1, Game 2: Johnstown Tomahawks 2 vs. Fairbanks Ice Dogs 4 (Series tied, 1-1) – The Fairbanks Ice Dogs got big games from forwards Jonathan Sorenson and Brenden MacLaren, who both scored twice as the Ice Dogs won in Game 2 of the Robertson Cup Semi-Final on Saturday night by a 4-2 score over the Johnstown Tomahawks at Fogerty Arena. Much like yesterday afternoon, Fairbanks collected the game's first goal when Jonathan Sorenson deflected a John Stampohar shot past Carter McPhail for a 1-0 Ice Dogs lead. Ice Dogs forward Brendan MacLaren increased the Tomahawks lead to 2-0 six minutes with his first goal of the evening. Johnstown went work on the comeback trail as Oliver Benwell potted his 10th goal of the post season. At the 1:23 mark of the 2nd period, MacLaren added his second goal of the afternoon for a 3-1 Ice Dogs lead. Ten minutes after the Ice Dogs goal, Roman Kraemer scored his seventh of the playoffs from a Benwell pass to cut the Ice Dogs lead to 3-2. The Ice Dogs regained their two-goal lead at 4-2 with a power play goal from Sorenson at 8:14 of the 3rd period. Ice Dogs goalie Mattias Sholl made 25 saves in the win, while Tomahawks goalie Carter McPhail made 40 saves in the loss. Game 3 of the Robertson Cup Semi-Final will be on Sunday, May 12 at 3pm with the winner advancing to the Robertson Cup National Championship Game on Tuesday. Boxscore

Robertson Cup Semi-Final #2, Game 2: Amarillo Bulls 2 vs. Aberdeen Wings 3 (OT) (Series tied, 1-1) – Aberdeen Wings forward Nic Sicoly scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime as the Wings forced a 3rd and deciding game in their Robertson Cup Semi-Final series against the Amarillo Bulls thanks to a 3-2 win on Saturday night. It was a rough start for the Wings in the 1st period as the Bulls looked like they were on their way to the Robertson Cup title game, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame thanks to goals from Logan Jenuwine and Brenden Datema. However, the Wings totally turned the tables in the 2nd period, outshooting the Bulls 14-4 and tying the game at 2-2 thanks to late goals from Tim Makowski and Nic Sicoly. In the 3rd period, both teams had their chances, especially the Wings who fired 18 shots on goal in the period, but were unable to crack Bulls goalie Justin Evenson. The Wings carried the momentum into overtime and some nice work down below the goal line led to a pass out front to Sicoly, who was left all alone to put one past Evenson for the game-winner. Game 3 of the Robertson Cup Semi-Final will be on Sunday, May 12 at 6pm with the winner advancing to the Robertson Cup National Championship Game on Tuesday. Boxscore
