NAHL Weekend Preview
It is a pre-Thanksgiving weekend in the NAHL, which is stuffed with 22 games from Friday to Sunday and the jockeying in the standings continues.
The league continued its commitments this past weekend, with two more players announcing their NCAA Division I commitments, bringing the current season total to 120 players.
One of the things the NAHL does better than any other junior league is seeing their players earn an NCAA opportunity while playing and being showcased in the NAHL. During the 2020-21 season, a record number of 395 NAHL players made NCAA commitments, with 293 of those (74%) being a record number of NCAA Division I commitments.
This past week also saw nine NAHL alumni earn weekly honors in five different NCAA Division I hockey conferences.
This weekend in the Central, the 1st place North Iowa Bulls are 4-0-1 in their last five games and are in St. Cloud for a single game on Saturday. The Aberdeen Wings and Bismarck Bobcats tangle in a home-and-home series, while Minot is in Austin for the final series of the weekend.
In the East, the battle for the 4th and final playoff spot heats up as the Northeast Generals host the Jamestown Rebels, with the Rebels just two points behind the Generals for the 4th and final spot. Danbury continues their busy week as they are in Johnstown on Saturday and Sunday after facing New Jersey on Wednesday and Thursday. Maryland, New Jersey, and Maine are off the remainder of the weekend.
In the Midwest, the Minnesota Wilderness and Chippewa Steel finish their series on Saturday after the Wilderness won in a shootout on Thursday. The Janesville Jets put their four-game winning streak on the line as they host the Minnesota Magicians. The Kenai River Brown Bears look to continue their momentum of a 4-2 win on Thursday as they host the Jr. Blues two more times. Finally, the battle for the top spot in the division resumes this weekend as a new rivalry is born when the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and Anchorage Wolverines battle for the first time.
In the South, Wichita Falls is unbeaten in regulation in their last five games and they will host the New Mexico Ice Wolves, who are just two points ahead in 3rd place. Shreveport is in El Paso for the first time as both teams look to get out of the bottom of the South Division. The final series has the Amarillo Wranglers gunning for 1st place as they host the Corpus Christi IceRays.
